I had to read up on this before I realized it was the (old) Universal Amphitheater we were talking about here... I hate the practice of renaming venues... even for Gibson!!
This was a pretty well-used venue, back-in-the-day.
I can't stand this renaming issue ether. It's especially annoying for the likes of us when trying to find out if Mark has played at this certain venue before back in the 80s! Sponsorship is the main reason for this and it even applies to things like football stadiums these days.
I suppose theatres are much less susceptible to this kind of thing e.g. The Fox, Detroit is surely still that - please!
In Scotland we're in a strange situation where the SECC has been called just that since it was opened in 1985 but it's regarded as rubbish for music concerts! A new venue called The Hydro has been built only yards away from it with a larger capacity. This has already become something of a joke since workmen set it on fire a night before completion, then only a few days ago food poisoning was traced to burgers served at an event there! To be fair, I've never been in it so it may be very good indeed and is designed for good acoustics.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE_HydroThe Edinburgh Playhouse remains my favourite and has had that name since 1929 with a cosy capacity of around 3,000. A short walk from the city centre and main train station too, unlike the SECC.
