Audio levels on DVD players?
« on: March 06, 2009, 05:48:26 AM »
Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone can help with an issue that has bugged me for years?

I have a handful of music DVDs where the output audio level is so high it distorts when hooked up through my stereo speakers. Its only certain ones though and there is no provision in my player (a lowly PS2 BTW) to adjust the level.

So for instance, Nirvana unplugged, Dylan unplugged, Beatles Anthology, Live Aid - all distort and ruin the experience somewhat. Whereas others such as Rattle & Hum, Gilmour live at the Albert Hall, Best of Dire Straits, and every movie i own etc are fine with perfect audio.

Any suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this type of thing?
My own thoughts are that the master audio level output is just too high on the DVD disc, but it seems remarkable to me that there is no standard that limits the level on all DVD players.

OK, thanks for hearing me out! :) If anyone has advice i`d appreciate it.

Strange one. I have the Beatles Anthology and it's not a problem on my set.

Have you tried switcing between the different audio options on the disc to see if the problem remains?

Also, is it the same through different audio outputs (ie headphones/phonos/scart etc)? And is it the same when you play the disc in a different player or on your computer?

I have tried all the audio options but haven`t tried another DVD player, i think thats the next step. I heard that the PS2 has a relatively low end laser reader but have never heard anyone else complain about this music thing. It may be not many people still use a PS2 as their main DVD player?

Just a quick update here (because i appreciate your reply dusty) - we bought a Xbox 360, and the player plays all my music DVDs at the correct output. Its wonderful!

I imagine there`s not too many folks still using their PS2 as a DVD player, but i`m surpirsed through searching on google the issue doesn`t seem to have been raised. Maybe just me!!!
