Remembrance Day (Mark Knopfler) (5.05)

LYRICS

On your maypole green
see the winding Morris men
Angry Alfie, Bill and Ken
waving hankies, sticks and boots
– all the earth and roots

Standing at the crease
the batsman takes a look around
The boys are fielding on home ground
The steeple sharp against the blue
– when I think of you

Sam and Andy, Jack and John
Charlie, Martin, Jamie, Ron
Harry, Stephen, Will and Don
Matthew, Michael – on and on

We will remember them
remember them, remember them
We will remember them
remember them, remember them

Time has slipped away
The summer sky to autumn yields
A haze of smoke across the fields
Let’s up and fight another round
and walk the stubbled ground

When November brings
the poppies on Remembrance Day
when the vicar comes to say
‘May God bless them, every one
Lest we forget our sons’

We will remember them
remember them, remember them
We will remember them
remember them, remember them

This still without doubt has to be one of my favourite MK compositions.
I've just today 're-visited' this gem of an album and this track, well I suppose all the tracks on this album are simply gems in their own right but this one does stand out especially with the typical 'Village/Town' theme going on throughout the song. This has to be a a very down to earth song.....

I love it too.  Seems to be underrated and overlooked.

I've just listened again in the car and I seriously wonder why it's so underrated....
I still keep thinking of Trafalgar Square and RD played there although it was only playback it was good to see MK 'Live' there..

Maybe because it's reflective and sad.
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home

Maybe because it's reflective and sad.

Maybe Piper is the song that most people think of along a similar vein in the solo portfolio and that takes precedence due to its many live performances and undoubted brilliance.  Such a shame as this deserves much more attention and often seems sidelined where "lesser" songs (the fillers) are given so much attention.

I guess you are right especially as like you say piper has been played numerous times and also exceptionally well....

Mark wrote many songs about parting about the war. But there is no cruelty in them. Piper To The End is a good example. Remembrance Day has more sadness and pain for me.

They are both very reflective songs and to be honest are classics in their own right. Remembrance day and also Piper are very sad, poignant songs based on reality

I love Remembrance Day too, but I think that the reason it receives less attention than songs like Piper To The End is because it is about one particular day and other sad and reflective songs are more general.    I always play it on Remembrance Day and would like it to be played on the radio on that day too.

Exactly. November 11. And it also returns every year for me.

Remembrance Day is for a figure there, in the same way as the love is in Romeo and Juliet.
In fair correctness, you're allowed to reflect it in every day of your life, not only on November 11.

It's true, but this November is important on Remembrance Day.

The war is a lesser talked about subject in Mark's song, and it doesn't immediately spring to mind as something Mark writes about, compared to someone like Roger Waters for example, but he has written about it in songs like Remembrance Day, Piper to The End, Brothers in Arms, Occupation Blues. Iron Hand, The Man's Too Strong, even Done with Bonaparte. Plus his famous rendition of The Last Post.
