Bohemian Rhapsody & Sultans of Swing
« on: October 31, 2018, 10:44:18 PM »
I'm just back from the movie about Queen, and I loved it, despite all the controversies about it.

What a pleasure, in the great reconstitution of Live Aid, to hear the end of the KILLER (ah,ah) version of Sultans, prior to Queen's entrance ! Although I was a bit pissed that Dire Straits was not even mentioned in the list of great artists that would perform on that day...

This makes me think, has Mark and Freddie ever spoke about each other ? Very different styles, both musically and personally (Mark is as quiet as Freddie was excessive), but two musical geniuses, each in his own way...

If I'm not mistaken Guy said they met briefly at the live aid and that was it.

Mocking, sound-alike... I’m feeling so sorry for him. But what should he do? If he sings anything it will sound like Freddie/George Michael anyway. So what else he shoul do? I think he’s doing great. By the way, he did a lot of vocals for the movie, enough said.

Actually the Live Aid Bohemian Rhapsody and Eyoooooo are completely Marc's vocals in the movie. An average listener wouldn't hear the difference. I knew it beforehand I saw it yesterday, but his resemblance is nearly perfect.

I have seen this yesterday also an insult to DS because they said: no phones (people who donated money) after Mark Knopfler. If PC has balls he calls Bryan Singer and askes him for a declaration, wtf Singer wanted with this scene. A very good movie but A BIG INSULT TO MARK!

Ha, that's quite funny, so implying that people stopped donating cause DS were so bad?!

I think Bryan Singer has bigger concerns at the moment to be honest.

If anyone has ever watched the BBC doco on Live Aid, they tell a linear story-line of the day where at some point in the afternoon Bob checks to see how much money has been donated and he is horrified to find out its only 1/2 million pounds at that point. He's pissed off, feels the BBC are more worried about presenting entertainment and not doing enough to promote the phone line donations and so he storms off to the BBC studio area. On his way in his own words, "Queen were doing the Radio Gaga thing" and he stops and watches the whole thing before entering the tv area. He then famously swears live on air to "get the fucking phone numbers up" and "give us your money"! From that point on the donations poured in; it was a combination of evening TV viewers kicking in and Bobs 'live on air' impassioned pleas. Immediately following Bobs rant a Sultan from Dubai donated 1 million...
The whole doco is very entertaining and informative, Part 2 chronicles the Day

The Rhapsody film is just an extended band promo, of course they would emphasise the time of day when the money started to roll in. Most folks would have just been enjoying the show for the day part and then when things got serious there really was a public response. I remember persuading my parents to donate 5 pounds :)

Edit - Bicknell features prominently throughout this documentary (end of Part1 especially) if anyone hasn't seen it.
