Tools for editing out 'echo' and otherson recordings
« on: August 12, 2009, 11:52:16 PM »
I've got some free software and also Music Editing Master, a reasonably good basic program, not too expensive.   Is there a tool in any program that will lesson the 'white noise' in a recording and also the 'echo' that almost always exists in a concert hall?       Obviously I don't know the technical terms for these problems.   And I know that I'll pay big time money for any software that can isolate particular sounds.    Big time money is not there, unfortunately.
But I'd sure like to clean up some recordings.
Thanks.

I've solved the problem of the 'white noise' but I won't admit what it is, for fear you will injure yourself falling on the floor laughing.   But I still need help with the echo business.    Anyone? Bueller?

I don't know if removing echoe is possible without destroying the audio quality of the whole recording.

I was afraid of that.   I suppose software to the tune of a couple thousand euros or dollars would do it, but who has that kind of money?  But thanks, ds

It's been a very long time since I've worked with any of this stuff, so I've been hesitant to reply. However, for removing echo, you could try to reduce the midrange a bit with a graphical equalizer- somewhere in the 600 Hz to 800 Hz range should work well. For "white noise" reduction, I presume you mean "noise reduction" such as hiss or tape noise. In the past, I've only really had luck with Adobe Audition v1.5 (I'm sure they're up to 17 by now, ha!) and "iZotope RX Complete Audio Restoration". Most of the digital noise reduction type software out there doesn't work very well at all.

There is a great thread on "eliminating noise" on Traders Den.   Very helpful.   Mostly, they say, leave the noise reduction and editing alone or to the experts.   Works for me! :)
