Vince Gill
« on: September 05, 2019, 11:52:11 AM »
Many many many years ago, when Vince Gill colaborated with MK and was asked to join Dire Straits, I tried to listen some of his stuff but at that time I wan't very much into country music so I didn't like it and forgot about it.

But as Vince participated in the Clapton Crossroads festivals, I saw those videos and thought he was a splendid guitar player and his voice was nice, and would worth to give him another chance.

I tried with one "best of" but it was just a record of mellow and, for me, boring country ballads, so... any Vince Gill fan around that could tell me which are his best works, when he started to play nice guitar as well? That best of didn't had any guitar, just his singing, and the Vinec Gill I like is the one playing very good guitar.

Any help?

I've heard that the albums Turn Me Loose and Guitar Slinger are quite good in terms of guitar, but mostly on his albums he plays very restrained and "for the song". It is when he plays live (Crossroads for example) that he really lets loose on the guitar. I have seen him live one time, and it was amazing. His second lead guitarist, Tom Britt, is also very good. He plays fingerstyle and slide.

There are some clips on YouTube where Vince plays with the supergroup The Players (Brent Mason, Paul Franklin), and he also played at a tribute concert to Greg Allman. Check out Midnight Rider. Great rock solo. Also check out the clips with him, Albert Lee and Danny Gatton.

I also found he released a record with Paul Franklin which sounds quite good!

Thank you.

Don't forget Go Rest High on That Mountain, which while being a slow ballad, one live version he performed did have a lovely guitar solo from Mark Knopfler.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

But the studio version is quite plain...

All in all I find Vince Gill too smooth for my liking. Amazing talent of course, but I prefer things that are not so slick.

Fair enough. I have not heard the studio version.
