Bryan Ferry - Windswept
« on: May 14, 2020, 05:03:42 PM »
Yesterday there was some discussion on Facebook about this song from the Boys and Girls album. Now i want to know the truth  :) Who is playing the lead guitar solo on this song? (starting 2.30)

According to Wikipedia it's David Gilmour, but there are also sites who credits MK as to be involved in this track (Acoustic or Lead guitar?), as well as Chester Kamen.

There are album credits on Wikipedia, but no song credits. I found on AMIT that MK played on 'Valentine' and 'Windswept', there is also a youtube video of MK world who credits MK. But what guitar did MK play then? Acoustic or the lead guitar?

Sources:

https://www.vivaroxymusic.com/songs_598.php (this ones says MK and Chester Kamen, but no mention about who plays acoustich and lead guitar)
http://pink-floyd.org/artint/88.htm (this one says David Gilmour plays guitar on "Boys And Girls", and no mention of 'Windswept')
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windswept (mentions David Gilmour)

Please help. Who knows the answer?

The lead guitar solo sounds kind of the same as the MK solo's on Northern land and Night Cafe of John Illsley, so it could be MK who plays the Windswept solo. But i'm not that sure...

I've always thought Don't Stop the Dance features MK's licks, because it sounds so much like him, but no sources tell about that. However, as far as I'm concerned, or maybe Guy stated, that this album was a total mess in terms of credits. Samples and licks scattered all over the album, and to be honest all this credits stuff is starting to give me some severe headaches.

But you as a guitar expert... Do you reckognise MK in the solo? Or Gilmour?

Doesn't really sound Knopfler-esque to my ears I'm afraid.  Don't Stop the Dance hasn't got much to go on but I can see what Quizzy making of it.  I think if Mark was going to be hired he'd be asked to do more than that.

Looks like Bryan Ferry is a mess himself.

The song "lost" in which MK plays guitar, released in Ferry's "avanmore" is a song with parts recorded during Avalon Roxy Music record, Boys and Girls sessions (MK guitar parts come from that sessions) and bits recorded during the years.

Guy Pratt says in his book that Ferry hired him and Jon Carin to record over tapes with just guitar parts of Knopfler and Gilmour not used on Boys and girls...

I find that the solo in windswept has some Planet of New Orleans licks in it. But the sound is not really knopfler. I don't find anything Gilmourian in it.

edit:
listening again there might be some ride across the river flavour to it too

definitely Knopfler to me

on his blog "Gilmourish", Bjorn says that Ferry "often like to produce the guitars himself", so it could explain why the tone si no Mkish nor Gilmourish
indeed, the only clue would be the way of playing and licks
so maybe, as Pierre says, it could be Mark, even if it's not his typical sound

I searched for 'windswept' on Guy's forum:

3 questions, and Guy doesn't know the answer.

This is a response of Mimmo Carrata to Julio:

Hi Guy,
In reply to my friend Julio’s question: yes, Mark plays on Windswept too.
I remember that I read about it in an old Bryan Ferry interview in 1984 when the album was released and it has been definitively confirmed now in a recent Bryan Ferry & Roxi Music official greatest hits. See the picture.
Ciao

Yes indeed. The post on Guys forum were from 2010. You remembered well.

But still not sure what MK is playing then. Lead or acoustic?

I'm sure about the acoustic. There are two magazines about MK guitars in which is said MK played various acoustic guitars on the Ferry sessions, (Lost features also MK on acoustic) and in windswept the acoustic licks are clearly Knopfler. The electric has the style also but can't be sure.

Sounds to me like Mark playing with a pick and trying to emulate Gilmour’s guitar tone.
