Puttin' it out there, or, what I do in my spare bedroom...
« on: August 21, 2021, 02:19:31 PM »
Hi, some of you may have stumbled across my music page from the signature bar at the bottom of my posts, but I thought I may as well do it properly & post on this page.
I've spent my working life in an office & I know my limits as a guitarist, but it's something we have to do, isn't it? . The first couple of tracks on here started life as backing tracks to play along to, then I decided I might as well do the full Mike Oldfield and turn them into the finished article.  There are a selection of MK tracks, other covers and a few of my own compositions, & I draw your attention to the disclaimer at the top of the page !

Everything you hear is either played or programmed by myself.  Unfortunately I have to upload them as mp3 files rather than WAV.files due to limits on my website.

Hi 3Strats!   Thank you.  I have only listened to the MK section so far, but I really enjoyed listening - I'm impressed!   I think I had a smile on my face throughout - in a good way, of course!     ;D

Thanks Val. You're very kind.

I think anyone who puts themself up against one of the worlds best gutarists is on dodgy ground, which is why I haven't posted covers of any of the DS classics !
In my opinion, most of my other covers are probably better than the MK ones as I'm not putting myself up for comparison with a guitar legend !

Talking of Mike Oldfield, so should give some of his stuff a go, he has a similar playing style to Mark, both being fingerstyle players, and lovers of Strats, and gorgeous tone, Mike even owns a MK Signature Fender Strat.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

The only catch with covering a Mike Oldfiled track is that I haven't got a Maggie Reilly available to do the vocals!  ;D ( Most of the tracks that I'd be interested in doing have a female lead vocal and are not in my range, and despite numerous requests I can't persuade my daughter ( who can sing) to sing for me) .

I'm currently contemplating having a go at a Stones' track as a tribute to Charlie Watts.

Fair enough. :thumbsup However, all the songs on his 2014 album Man on the Rocks have a male vocal.

I have to admit I haven't heard that album, I listened to a few tracks on-line, which I liked, but the ones with Luke Spiller singing will probably also be out of my range !  ;D

I finished & uploaded my Stones "tribute" - Start Me up. This was great fun to learn & play. (5 string open G tuning)

Although not inspired to do another cover of one of Mark's songs at present I've added a couple of tunes to the "other covers" section of my music page because as we know an obsession with only one artist isn't healthy (LOL) . I've tried to cover songs that I enjoyed or have influenced me since my teenage years when I first picked a guitar up, and at present I'm working on a couple of heavier mainstream rock songs with solos that will challenge my playing ability. If you feel brave enough to listen to a few I'd recommend you start at the bottom of each section as the recent ones are, in my opinion, the best.

Scroll down the page to find the songs:

Rather than starting a new thread, I'll just keep this one ticking over.

I've finally got around to attempting another of Mark's tunes; Our Shangri-La. I've been put off until now by the lack of a pedal steel guitar in my "collection", but I just about managed by tuning a 6 string to a pedal steel tuning and playing slide, and I added a bit of violin which I heard on a live arrangement.

Follow the link to my music page and then scroll down to the bottom of my MK covers.

Having a "creative spell", I revisited a song I started in 2020 during lockdown and wasn't happy with: Romeo & Juliet !
I've said in the past that I'd be reluctant to post any DS classics but I'm reasonably happy with this one after re-recording some of the guitar parts and tweaking a few of the virtual instrument tracks. My only gripe is that my cheap resonator guitar has a slight buzz that I can't seem to get rid of!

I've combined elements of the album track with the more recent live version with saxophone & Richard's outro solo.

Click on the link and scroll down to the bottom of the MK covers. Make a cuppa - it's nearly 8 minutes long.
