Record Store Day 2022 - Love Over Gold
« on: March 21, 2022, 10:13:34 AM »
I got emailed a list of RSD releases today and for some reason Love Over Gold is among the releases. The most info about the release I could find out is from the link below; half-speed, a lithograph and an essay (!)

Hey, i`ve got a truffle dog - finally a song the ordinary man can relate too!

It's actually a new interview with Mark, which could be very interesting.

I wonder how many times they can remaster and reissue the albums before saturation point.

My guessing at least another 4 or 5 times.  Then they have to go just a little bit further and we get one 'exclusive mix' of two young lovers or some such from the Alchemy recording when mel Collins blew one extra note ... or Tommy Mandel is completely removed from the mix

I would not expect much about this new interview. I don’t think there will be any news about new projects he is working on….

There are 2 DS albums that go for big money second hand, On the Night and Live at the BBC. Why they don’t release these for RSDI do not know.

I expect the interview will be only about the Love Ove Gold album, which I think could be worth reading, he rarely mentions anything from this album except for Telegraph Road.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

Hi dustyvalentino, yes a very good point with that two albums.
Dire Straits - On the night had been released in some countries like UK, Spain, Brazil, Germany and Zimbabwe. I have a pristine unplayed version from Zimbabwe on the ZMC-Label (Zimbabwe Music Company Harare). I got it for a very reasonable price, and all other versions are totally overpriced, also for average condition copies in vg+ condition. That is very slippery.
Dire Straits Live on the BBC is a really rare record, to my experience, so that will be difficult to catch a pristine copy for a reasonable price, but On the night is not so rare as stated by some traders, because you can find it on ebay for example really often, but Live on the BBC is really rare.
Yes, it will be a very good idea to re-release that two albums on a record-store-day event. Maybe as remastered editions on 180 gramm vinyl. That will be a good deal.

I agree re OTN and Live at the BBC

Also Alchemy should be added in, as 180 gram half speed edition.

There's actually potential for a 'live box set' with these albums alone.  Add in a bonus disc or two and then you are really talking

Such a Live-Box-Edition should include as a possible suggestion from my side: Alchemy-Live, On the night-Live, and for example a very goodsounding live-album from the early days of DS from the 1978-79 period, maybe one live-album from the 1980-81 period and, of course a very good live-performance from BIA-Tour 1985-86. That will be worth a complete DS Live -Box. Carefully chosen live-gigs in verygood soundquality with some barely played tracks from all concert-periods.  8)

Or something like the 1986 released Bruce Springsteen compilation-live-Box-Set "Bruce Springsteen Live 1975-85" on 5 Vinyls. :think 8)

A dream of me: Dire Straits - Live in Concert from 1978 - 1992 on 6-8 Vinyls in a nice box with a photo-booklet from various stages.  :think :think 8) 8) ;D ;D

I just remain to be convinced that the Zimbabwe On The Night is 100% legitimate!

Hi, yes it is a legitimate issue, also the other DS-MK-Vinyls from South-Rhodesia or since 1980 Zimbabwe issues on Vertigo, Polydor or other labels. The pressing plant was located in Harare in Zimbabwe.
I have watched the sale-phenomenon of the other OTN-Vinyl-Versions at online-marketplaces for years, and i have seen some crazy price-offers, of course NOT for near mint copies. In comparison with DS Live at the BBC, On The Night is not so rare. That is my opinion.

Many years ago, I came by this edition from Zimbabue with MGM labels.
https://www.discogs.com/release/7257169-Dire-Straits-Love-Over-Gold/image/SW1hZ2U6MzEwODMxOTc=

The seller also had the courtesy to "refund" me a small part of the purchase by including a bill of a hundred trillion dollars (Zimbabwean) in the parcel.

Working in a record shop for the last 7 years has given me an insight on such phenomena like constant reissues,  that previously I also though peculiar. There is always a market for Dire straits records. Their studio catalogue, especially up to BiA, is so in demand that the record company always tries to  keep them available but still we have a hard time finding them at times. And wholesale prices have skyrocketed so much the last 4-5 years, that in most cases they resemble the retail prices we used to have back then!!
So a new LoG edition, targets both keen audiophile collectors (the MOFO edition is so expensive!)  and loyal fans, but also covers the demand from people that want a good copy and are preparing to pay a bit more for something that is going to be by default a bit more scarce edition.

As for the albums after BiA, they are the ones that sell much less than the other titles, so perhaps this is why the company is hesitant to re-release them. But in deed a limited edition RSD, might be the  solution for this. But I would rather have an official release  of some  the 85-86 concerts, a compilation of hard to find tracks or even better some studio quality demo versions.

Because if we dream and wish, we should do it to the max!

Come on, it is not funny anymore.

The greatest joy and surprise at Record Store Day was in 2015 when The Honky Tonk Demos was released (with a small date error)
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home
