Dire Straits' first gig
« on: June 06, 2022, 10:49:23 AM »
on 26th june I will write a little chronicle about Dire Straits' first gig because the date will celebrate its 45 anniversary

I already have the "strange" picture with "dummies" (or more likely a mistake mixing two photos... :think) and of course the more recent picture with Mark and John at Farrar house for the plate.

But if memory serves, someone posted here the gig poster ? not sure though... :think

in the Oldfield book, it's written that they still were called Cafe racers for this gig and David printed T-shirts. so I am not sure if we ever saw this poster.
maybe it was another one from a gig during summer or fall 77

if someone can remember, thanks in advance  :wave

I once wrote to Colin Bodiam asking about the first concert because the date was unclear (in M Oldfield's book it is July)
Here is the answer:

I suspect the flyer date IS correct. Whichever date, there was just the one festival  and, yes, Dire Straits came on around four in the afternoon with Squeeze headlining as the last act of the day around ten that night. Their lighting was provided by. Bikers on their motorbikes!

"Et coïncidence énorme, Joop de Korte était roadie pour Squeeze lors de ce concert du 26 juin 1977 ! Bien qu’il dise n’avoir aucun souvenir de la prestation du quatuor cet après-midi-là, il a donc croisé Dire Straits pour leur tout premier concert, avant de les rejoindre quelques années plus tard et de rester dans l’équipe jusqu’à la fin du groupe. Il s’est depuis quelques temps installé dans le pays basque"

Why I didn't know about it :think

Thank you JF.

"Sur une des photos, on peut voir l’affiche du concert au Albany Empire qui indique bizarrement le 2 juillet"

The poster informs about the concert on July 2 1978, Albany Empire, Deptford. Inside is Colin Bodiam who I wrote to once :)

I updated the article with infos provided by Brunno, Robson and Pottel :

- the telecaster is in open A
- Joop de Korte joined the band in 79
- the gig poster is from july 78
- David Knopfler post a comment yesterday, saying again the date was the 18th
