Love Over Gold Sessions
« on: May 11, 2023, 12:30:53 PM »
In Michael Oldfield's book, there is a sentence that Mark wrote 20 songs. Yes, we know that Love Over Gold album was supposed to be a double. But we only know 11 songs.

Telegraph Road
Private Investigations
Industrial Disease
Love Over Gold
It Never Rains

Twisting By The Pool
Badges, Posters, Stickers, T-Shirts
Two Young Lovers
If I Had You

The Way It Always Starts

Private Dancer

Is it possible that the archives from this session contain unknown songs?

I guess there might be demos (we know there is one for Private Dancer) maybe they will come out when, um, you know.

I remember reading an interview with Tina Turner where she says she heard the demo of Private Dancer with Mark singing and she really loved it, that would be a real gem for the Dire Straits rarities box set.
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

This is how he also mentions it in his autobiography "My Love Story" I wonder. 20 songs but we don't know more titles.

That's true. So only 10 from this session. Where is the half?  ::)

I wonder if there is some hybridization in that list. We all know Mark wrote lots of musical passages that were moved/repurposed over the years. News/P.I. outro being one example, NCD riff, and others. Just a thought.....

I recall Hal Lindes telling in Facebook that they had a very large number of songs, if my memory serves, close to 17 songs, during the LOG sessions, most of them ended in other DS and MK records in the future.

Maybe during that time MK wrote BIA, i think the sessions coincided with the Falklands war, they gave it a first try and decides to leave it and concentrate in others.

I also guess maybe songs like "rudiger" or "secondary waltz" might had been there as we know both are very old songs that MK had written very very early but was never satisfied with them at the time.

Also Hal said he had tapes recorded with his Walkman of all that sessions, that he used to work in the songs.
You might get lucky, now and then

I thought Brothers in Arms (the song) was written as well during that time

Yes, Brothers In Arms may have already had a draft. Rudiger probably even earlier, if Mark was thinking about John Lennon.

I wonder if any of instrumental pieces from local hero soundtrack (freeway flyer, smooching, Boomtown...) might have been composed during LOG sessions, and Hal could remember some music played by Mark during that era, but without lyrics, and this music could have ended as movie music...  :think
