A fun little nugget from the BIA tour
« on: August 13, 2023, 09:33:47 AM »
I came across a Norwegian site which is dedicated to the venue Drammenshallen in Drammen, Norway, and the many concerts that have taken place there, including DS in 1981 and 1985. The site is: https://www.meteorittmannen.no/elementer-28/1985-10-22-23-dire-straits . It contains a number of scanned news clippings, amongst others this one which caught my attention:

Edit: I decided to edit the woman's last name in the translated text so it won't come up in the search engines.

1985-10-25  Dire Straits 2.jpg

I scanned the text and ran it through Google Translate:

Mark Knopfler fell for Siw from Solbergelva

DRAMMEN: First a hearty dinner, then a free concert in Drammenshallen and finally a nachspiel with Mark Knopfler. The meeting with the Dire Straits members at Bragernes Torg on Wednesday morning turned into an unforgettable stay with one of the world's most famous artists. When Mark Knopfler left Fornebu yesterday, Siw B. (21) from Solbergelva had to promise to meet him again in London for the big Christmas concert.

If Siw had wanted to, she could have accompanied Mark Knopfler to Stockholm yesterday, but her job at the reception at Müllerhotell in Drammen prevented her from doing so. To be on the safe side, Mark Knopfler gave her a worldwide free pass to all his concerts, as well as the phone number at home in London
- I got a very positive impression of the band, says Siw B. to DT-BB
— Mark Knopfler was particularly nice, and we chatted and had fun during dinner in the luxurious Dire Stralts bus before the concert on Wednesday. Afterwards, I joined -The Royal Family-, as the closest friends of Dire Straits are called, to the concert in Drammenshallen and ended the evening with the band. I was pleasantly surprised by how the fellows behaved. No alcohol was touched before the concert, and the conversation that took place was very pleasant. Mark could also say that he was very uneasy before the first concert on Tuesday, and would have preferred to cancel the show and sleep in after the long and tiring flight, she says. Only a small number of the audience discovered during Wednesday's concert that Mark Knopfler dedicated one of the songs, which he does not usually include in his concert repertoire, to his Norwegian girlfriend. Siw B. had no doubt who he meant — At least I'm not going to quit my job, laughs Siw after all the commotion her friends have started to "congratulate" her with Mark. If Siw does not take the initiative to call Mark Knopfler, then he has obtained her address and telephone number in Solbergelva. When we ask her if Mark Knopfler can treat her to a trip to London, she smiles evasively.

Mark Knopfler fell for Siw B. from Solbergelva when he met her outside Buskerudbanken on Bragernes Torg on Wednesday morning. When Mark left Fornebu yesterday, Siw had to promise to meet him again in London.

This is interesting! Was he not married to Lourdes Salomone by 1985?  :o

Also, what song could he have dedicated to her? Follow Me Home?

Ha-ha! Nice one! Does anyone know the setlist from the show?

Mark and Lourdes got married in 83?

The website I linked to mentions Drammens Tidende-Buskered Blad, which according to Wiki is a local newspaper in the town of Drammen. It would be fun to track the woman down and ask her to verify the story.

I don't use Facebook. Isn't there someone from a Norwegian fan club on here? Maybe they would be interested in contacting her.

First two shows after the N American leg were at the Drammenhalle, just outside Oslo. Nothing on Setlist FM unfortunately.

Good chat up line:  how'd you like tickets to all my shows?

I think perhaps something has been lost in translation.

:lol I had to laugh out loud reading the headline! I am Norwegian and the translation is acutally surprisingly good. I have a vague memory of reading this before (not at the time, a bit too young), but since I haven't heard anything about it through the years I have been a fan, it has just passed as an exaggeration from the newspaper I guess.I volunteer to contact her tomorrow, if not any of you others have tried? It is a bit..invading to ask, but at the same time, it is allowed to ask.

Thanks for doing that, if she doesn't want to talk she can just ignore you.

I always assumed the British tabloids were the worst but this seems like a terrible thing for this newspaper to have done!

If the woman doesn't wish to talk, maybe the journalist will? His contact details are available online.

I'd be surprised if the journalist remembered it to be honest.
