MK said at the time that he had self-sabotaged the song from being a US country hit by playing the distorted Les Paul over it, something that would never get played on country radio.

Randy's version is almost identical but with better singing and a more palatable solo for country radio. According to wiki, Pig Robbins, Matt Rollins and Paul Franklin all play on Randy's album so I guess they got paid twice for playing the same thing!

That was Mark's thing at the time. He said the same about How Long.

Speaking of covers, it dawned on me the other day that Calling Elvis is very much a bluegrass song. Change the instrumentation, and play it in 2/4 time, and bam! I searched YouTube, and what do you know:

(Except they play it in 4/4 time.)

Sounds great!

Yeah, but it lacks the powerful, singing, crying guitar...

I didn't listen all the way through. Yes, Mark's solo on this one is beautiful. (What a shame that he stopped playing like that. It's not even hard technically, so that's not a reason.)

Never knew this cover. It's beautiful. Mark's version is my #1 MK song btw. In love with the outro since i first heard it, at first i didn't like MK's singing..

Happens to be the song I want played at my funeral - with the full guitar outro! (Are we in trouble now, not Calling Elvis!)
