Sir Michael Parkinson Has Died
« on: August 17, 2023, 11:59:34 AM »
Sadly Michael Parkinson has passed away.  If you don't like in the UK you won't understand just how legendary the man was.  The knighthood may say something but he was known as the "King of chat show hosts."  Anyone who was anyone wanted on his show and he got the best out of them.  His show Parkinson was a regular for many, many years first broadcast in 1971.

Mark appeared during the STP promo tour in 2001 and played WII followed by an interview.

I've just read the sad news that Michael Parkinson has died.    He was the very best interviewer, allowing his guests to do the talking. I always looked forward to his shows on TV.   RIP.

I recorded that show on VHS and watched it a million times. Killer performance of WII and an unbelievable badass sound on MFN. I love how you can hear his nails tick on the strings from his mic.

He's made one of the best interviews with Paul McCartney as well. Paul played a brilliant version of "The Long And Winding Road" there, especially the version in the rehearsals was mind-blowing (better than the actual show), though it's hard to find.

He was a lovely, likeable man. One of the things that made him the king of chat show hosts was he made his guests the stars. He took a genuine interest in them, asked questions that would get the best out of them and his guests were not used as a platform for his own humour.

I owned his autobiography but never managed to finish it. Might still be at my parents.
Like MK, his early career was in journalism which really helped him with his questioning skills.
The interview with MK was great. I suspect that he wasn’t a natural DS fan as he was an enormous jazz connoisseur but he clearly took an interest in Mark.

Occasionally he did a whole episode just with one guest and, as already mentioned, the episode with McCartney is excellent and features Dave Gilmour playing guitar in his band.

Deliberately subjective I guess. My good reason for doing something might be different to your good reason for doing something.
