I hope David Knopfler won't mind, but these are important words (published on Facebook) on the subject of Al.
With AI now writing the lion’s share of Dire Straits BS on social media, the real history, for what little it’s worth, is rapidly evaporating. That the truth is going begging in something as trivial as this arguably matters little - although for me it’s resulting in a defamatory narrative to some degree in the lean it encourages - but what is this going to do to less trivial facts when the pressures to invent noise over signal to obtain commercialised views leads to important historical facts being skewed?
This is why I was so keen to have Ed's Q&A stored on here in one place. Would be good to collate Chris' thoughts as well but that would be a big task.
AI basically scrapes "trusted" sources, condenses it and regurgitates. I have worked in media a bit and newspapers will print basically anything you send them in a press release if they think it's interesting, they don't have time to fact check.
I asked Chat GPT about my own little band for fun and it regurgitated some factually correct but wilfully misleading nonsense that I had written that was subsequently reprinted in a downmarket UK tabloid. Because it's on the tabloid's website, it's now there on the web forever as "fact".
