Next clamshell box set?
« on: October 04, 2025, 02:00:35 PM »
For a while, there was one per year.
  • 2020: Dire Straits - The Studio Albums (lamentably without the EP or b-sides)
  • 2021: Mark Knopfler - The Studio Albums 1996-2007
  • 2022: Mark Knopfler - The Studio Albums 2009-2019
  • 2023: Dire Straits - Live 1978-1992
It was a nice way to fill the gap between Mark's last two albums (2019 and 2024), and 2025 was taken up by the 3CD / BD Brothers in Arms and the Sailing to Philadelphia BD.
What do you think will be the center of the next reissue campaign? My money is on the soundtracks (they could reuse the title and artwork of Screenplaying), but I'd also be tempted by one or several MK solo live box sets as discussed  on https://www.amarkintime.org/forum/index.php?topic=8857.msg182746
Hopefully, the rare DS tracks are mopped up on some collection soon enough. The nicest thing would be to release them on a single CD but who knows...

A soundtrack Box would indeed make sense. It was an important part of his work for many years and there are some of them never been released on vinyl (Wag The Dog, Shot At Glory, Almeria). No special content ecpectable but they seem to think in terms of "catalogue" and "boxes" now. So it is possible.

A Solo Live Box (or two) would be a dream but I doubt it somehow.

I guess you have to be realistic about the sales potential for these things. Would a soundtrack box set sell?

Have a look at the Metroland RSD release... people can hardly give it away. You can pick up this "limited" release for as low as £6 on Discogs...

True and of course it has to do with the kind of "niche" movies which MK chose to do the soundtrack for.
Local Hero might be an exception but apart from that, nobody ever has heard or seen of the movies he has done the soundtracks for. All extremely low-key.

You are mostly correct, but I will remind you of The Princess Bride which is a beloved classic these days :)

Asked about the lack of extra live material in the 25th anniversary STP edition, Guy said this in his forum:

"Many things make no sense if we are not fully aware of the facts."

He said that on July 25th and when I read it I thought about two possibilities about that facts:

- They didn't find material or the material wasn't good to be used
- They are going to use that material for something in the future

Maybe a clamshell box set of MK live performances?

There is no live album during his entire career, and two during the DS career, that is way shorter, but more successful.

I don't expect nothing but, christmass is around the corner.

three if you count Live at the BBC

during the solo years, you can count A night in London and real live roadrunning

It seems to have become an 80s cult film now.  I suppose in light of Potter and all the other mythological guff released in recent years it's brought it to the attention of the younger generation.  I can't bring myself to watch all of it, even if Columbo is in it.  Pile of rubbish and his most uninspiring soundtrack of the period.

Put Princess Bride on the box and they'll sell for sure.

It has a certain sense of humour to it that you either find funny or you don't.

I like it. My 15 year old recently watched it with me and he enjoyed it as well, especially Wallace Shawn. And he actually mentioned during the film that the music was good, he got a shock when MK's name came up at the end, ha.

to be honest i prefer a solo live boxset above a movie box if it only contains the well known  released albums

To be honest, vinyl is a whole different can of worms that I wasn't thinking much about. I'm mainly into CDs and I'd like the ability to pick up all of his soundtrack work beyond Local Hero in one fell swoop, and hopefully with new non-HDCD remastering too.
