...is up and running from this morning!
However, the first entry reveals no surprises. But it is good to know that things are going to start slowly...
LE

Thanks a lot for the heads up, L.E.! :)
-
Great to read it again.
Thanks Guy. :)

Mark furnished me with a the list of songs he wants the try a few weeks back and I dutifully prepared and sent out CD's (a mixture of live stuff from the last tour and studio recordings) to the rest of the band so they can learn and revise.
I'm very curious which songs are on that list...

You can't beat the house :P

Yes, the diaries are an integral part of the fun. Instead of just seing a show or 2 (or 10), it feels like we're are at every single one!
-
Is he just using copy and paste from the last tour diary 'cos he's going on about that 'Smurf-wax' stuff again! :lol

I'd rather say that's his very ritual... ;)

Kind of suggests the only songs we're getting that have been played live before are ones that were done on the last tour...

Sounds good to me! :)

Guy said: The album has come and gone now but we're all very excited about the prospect of playing the new tunes
Hopefully , we can have song(s) from the last album.

Sounds good to me! :)
Would prefer some turnover, pretty bored of a lot of the set now.

That's what I meant! If he ONLY plays SOME stuff from last tour and otherwise stuff NEVER PLAYED LIVE BEFORE...! ;D

True, wouldn't mind some older stuff being played again though, like, say, Water of Love or maybe... Tunnel of Love? ;)

Water of Love or maybe... Tunnel of Love? ;)
Wouldn't make sense considering Guy's original quote... :o

Don't you get it

Great Song!!!

He said that before the KtGC tour too, and then they played two tracks from the album.
-
Yes, but afther the KTGC tour he said (or mark said) the next setlist will be different. (i remember something like that...)
-
It definitely WILL BE different! ;D
btw: after a showcase in 2002 (RPD promo) I asked him about tracks that didn't make it on the album...
His reply was: "They won't probably be on the next album, but you will have them live" :-\ ;)

Strange answer... Now, 8 years later, we still haven't heard those songs..
-
Let's pray Jesus, guys :-\ :-\
-
My guess is that we'll hear The Man's Too Strong this time, since they rehearsed it for the last tour, but never played it. (They played Hillfarmers Blues instead. I can't understand why they couldn't play both ;))
-

Agreed about the set list - i suspect its going to be live stuff they have played before - WHY WHY WHY?? There is SO much quality stuff to choose in from the MK back catalogue - come on - pick some new and different tunes - us regular concert go-ers have heard it all before....
Suspect TMTS is going to be rolled out this time - but I really havent got high hopes for anything "new" this tour.....
-

One possible explanation is that Mark is not satisfied with the result.
"Silvertown Blues" was rehearsed in 2001 and was left off.
"Devil Baby" saw the light once in 2008 and bye bye...
-
"Mark furnished me with a the list of songs he wants the try a few weeks back and I dutifully prepared and sent out CD's (a mixture of live stuff from the last tour and studio recordings) to the rest of the band so they can learn and revise."
This sounds fairly clear to me...I know it's just a "pool", but still...
-
same with knoxville
or portebello was also rehearsed and then never played...
etc..
-
Dug this out of the amazing archive.org, from Guy's site years ago:
Since I've been asked so many times, 'what songs were planned for the 2003 shows?'.... here's the original song rehearsal list which MK drew up and from which I made the rehearsal CD's. Obviously, not all of these songs would have been performed. Indeed I'm sure there would have been much discussion. The list includes date and place of original recording. (Possibly a PRIZED collectors item for the future!!! or maybe even a competition prize)
So let's hear no more about it, eh?
baloney again - Clyde auditorium Glasgow 2001
brothers in arms - Bilbao 2001
calling Elvis - Madrid 2001
done with Bonaparte - Newcastle city hall 2001
Romeo and Juliet - Madrid 2001
so far away - Bilbao 2001
speedway at Nazareth - Bilbao 2001
sultans of swing - Madrid 2001
Telegraph road - Bilbao 2001
Rudiger - Closten hall Bristol 1996
walk of life - Bilbao 2001
what it is - Clyde auditorium Glasgow 2001
sailing to Philadelphia - Massey hall Toronto 2001
why aye man - Shepherds Bush Empire 2002
quality shoe - Shepherds Bush Empire 2002
on every street - Paris - Bercy 1991
on every street - on every street album
a night in summer long ago - golden heart album
coyote - RPD album
hillfarmer

I would love to hear something from Golden Heart, other than Rudiger. Old Pigweed would be a fantastic surprise. I'm hoping for Marbletown again.
-
On every street! Pleasssseeeeeeee!
-
Some really great suggestions here, songs I EXACTLY want to hear:
Marbletown again, On Every Street, The Man's Too Strong, Portobello Belle, Old Pigweed...
I might add from the new album NOT Monteleone, but Before Gas & TV, Cleaning My Gun, Too Far From The Clyde, Piper To The End...
I DO NOT want to hear (anymore)
Done With Bonaparte, Rudiger, Sonny Liston, What It Is (kind of castrated last time, but nevertheless can't hear it anymore), Telegraph Road, So Far Away... Blimey, for some new stuff I could even forswear Speedway!!
My opinion why Mark does not play so much new stuff: He doesn't want to learn so much new live stuff, because that kind of laziness is around him (yes, I know he IS still touring so he is not lazy at all, but I mean it in a special way), playing old tunes is fun for him because he has not to think about it, so play Done with Bonaparte or Walk of Life the bazillionth time... Ok, he should have fun, but why not work something interesting out? Last tour was a good example, the best stuff was the new one like True Love Will Never Fade, Hill Farmer and Marbletown!
Let's hope for some interesting diary entries the next few weeks!

I completely agree! Let's study Tunnel of Love again Mark! ;D My favourite of all time...
-
On every street! Pleasssseeeeeeee!
I'd love to hear that too but unfortunately that was only on the list because Fats Caplin was to be in the band for TRD tour and he could take the place (if not quite "fill the shoes of") the great Paul Franklin.
-
I was listening this morning to a 24 min version of TOL (Uniondale 85) WOWWWW!!!!
I was thinking, bearing in mind most songs live are about 5 mins. Would most people here rather him play 4/5 songs, or a 24 min version of TOL?
I think i'd quite like TOL ;D but with perhaps (i can't believe i'm saying it) dropping TR.
I'm sure he'll play the setlist pretty safe again, but just one curve ball would be such a great feeling. I'll never forget HFB's in Amsterdam in 08.
Maybe.........
SHS, OUATITW or ITG :o
Cheers BBB
-
I'd prefer 4 or 5 new or neglected songs! :)

I'd be happy with TR dropped, especialy if he plays it like he did on the last tour using the National for most of the song and missing out important fills.
Didn't miss it in 2006. Speedway is an adequate "big number before the encores".
-
I really liked TR in 2008 and I listen to Red Rocks and Charlotte a lot. In fact, when I listen to other favourite versions, I really miss the cittern, even though it wasn't played in Red Rocks. I liked Richard's fill-ins on the 2008 versions, too, but I don't mind it being dropped next time in favour of something new or rarely played. :)
I wouldn't like 24 minutes of TOL taking up such a large part of the concert, either, when other songs could be played. Anyway, a great chunk of the Uniondale TOL, was taken up with band introductions and other chitchat, which would be a complete waste of valuable time! (Sorry BBB, I know you love it!) :-* The Wembley '85 version was better imo.
-
I am afraid that TOL won't make it in a MK setlist, remembering Guy being asked about the matter.
But who knows, Mark can change his mind and have a try on it, as for example HFB live turned out to sound much better than Mark himself expected it.
1986 version clocked at 11 minutes so that would let time even for an extra tune compared to the 15+ minutes version of TR.
-
IF MK is going to play les boys i`ll sell my tickets.
A night in summer long ago will be great.
And, How Long, On every street, you and your friend, in the sky..
"les Boys" I used to think what an odd song from MK. But now I actually think it's OK . So, it'll be a riot to hear. I'll buy your ticket to see one more show if he plays it. ha..ha...
I think I can live without "quality shoe" and "TLWNF".
Hope "HFB" stays on the list.
-
MK has tons of minutes he could play. Of course. But put it in a "right" 2 hour setlist I think is quite difficult.
I hope they will extend again to a 2.5 hour set or minimum 2 hour 15 set.
Play old stuff, play new stuff and play the old hits everybody wants to hear. And it all must fit. (MK must think about this a lot)
But: Some numbers really get boring by the time. A mixture of new tunes and powerful songs would be cool.
Some 4 GL songs and TOL,Boom,SAN,Solid Rock,Darling pretty and the rest are old hits...
By the way: Interesting point Love Expresso ;D ;D ;D
-
I'm sure this is well known by now, but I didn't know, and happened to stumble on this today. The rehearsal studio they used for the KtGC tour was the North Studio at Music Bank studios in Southeast London:
http://www.musicbank.org/studios/north_studio/north_studio.html
-
Equipment has left for the big reunion..can't wait to see Dr. Morbius again
This is from Guy's twitter site. Don't know what he refers to with Dr. Morbius... I know the "production rehearsal 2008" was in an old film studio, Bray film studio... So maybe anybody knows what "Dr. Morbius" means...
LE
-
I hope he doesn't refer to Morbus with Dr. Morbius....
Hahaha
But it's well possible in the actual season, isn't it?
-
Today a new entry!
On the forum he posted this:
As most forum followers know, I don't reveal any of the setlist at this stage as there's absolutely no guarantee that any of the songs will make it to a show, however I feel I must concede we have been running SFFTC.
AND
Thanks Isabella, Tunnel of love is not on the cards..no surprises there
-
:) :D ;D :lol !!! SFFTC !!! :lol ;D :D :)
-
........however I feel I must concede we have been running SFFTC.[/i]
W O N D E R F U L !!! :lol

Yes! Fantastic IF it will make it to the final list...
And I hope Border Reiver (as opener, must be!) and Piper to the End are also on the list.... :-*
-
I would like to hear In the Sky, such a beautiful song.
It makes me calm, I really would love to hear that song Live.
Lars

The only thing about Border Reiver is that the fiddle and whistle are being played at the same time. Now I know JMcC's good but... :lol

I bet they'll find a way out of that dilemma...
There was no pedal steel during the 2002 Charity shows either! ;)
Worst case they could keep Tim O'Brien or Michael McGoldrick to support John.
Having said that I notice that the setlist could indeed change after the US leg!!! :-X
-
GL is Mark's strongest album since RPD so I hope that they will actually build the setlist around that album this time, like they did in the past with the new songs.
Piper, Clyde, RD and Gas&TV are all fine quiet songs and BR, Beat the House and Cleaning My Gun are more energetic. Working from that, and, as others have suggested, having Reiver in the beginning and Piper at the end should make a nice frame for the setlist. And maybe some oldies, goldies...

I hope so!!
Beat the house? No thank you :P
-
Border reiver would be nice to hear live, but SFFTC is awesome! :o
-
mm, bit slow...but what song is that?
-
Guessing So far from the Clyde. I hate abbreviations too!
I would love to hear this song, and a lot from Get Lucky. Last time it didn't bother me too much not to have many songs from the latest album but this time, I'd be happy if they played Get Lucky from start to finish, twice, then finish with Going Home.
-
When I first heard Border Reiver on the album, I thought it would make a great opener to the set.
-
Cleaning my gun would also be a great opener.
I hope he doesn't spill any more beans. :-\
-
He didn't spill no beans, dusty, as he pointed out, it is not because they tried a song at rehearsals that it's gonna make the setlist.
-
Yeah right.
-
I know you don't like to be setlist-spoiled, dusty.
But isn't it worse to already know the whole sound of the shows by knowing the type of amps used? ;D
-
I won't bet with you dusty, as it's got a 50-50% chance of making it. Too risky!
-
Ahhh, so there's a big chance "So Far From The Clyde" will be in the setlist? Oh my God, that would be awesome! Simply because I didn't expect they'd even rehearse it - it seems to be too "epic" to be played live, if you know what I mean.
-
still no diary update... :'(

Maybe tomorrow... :D With pics ;D

Let's wait.
Mr Cummings told me that "everything's going VERY well".... ;D

Heheeee,
And still there are people on the GF forum, asking set list questions!!!???!!!
Strange ......
-
Heheeee,

Strange ......
Yes... But it's a little bit logical as Guy told everyone they have been running SFFTC!
Why the hell did he said that?? Ofcourse more people are trying to get more spoilers...
I think it's his own fault...
-
I don't see any answers to the questions on Guy's forum this morning! :-\
-
I don't consider it a fault at all and I don't feel my anticipation spoilt.
I like such info but I wouldn't ask personally.
Even less after he's revealed something.
Some people simply grab a whole hand if they're given a little finger...

Yes, true... I wouldn't ask him too. We know those question are 'forbidden' but as you see,
there are always people trying... And that's because Guy told us of SFFTC.
-

Me neither... Resolution has changed.. I see a little bit, if I doubleclick on the little part of the answer, the text get selected.
Than copy & paste it elsewhere. Than you can read his answer.

Just click his RSS feed and you can read his answer without copy & paste http://www.guyfletcher.co.uk/rss/

Hhhhmmmm I would love to hear Border Reiver, Get Lucky, Monteleone, Before Gas & TV, they are my favourites! I also like to listen again to Telegraph Road and Speedway! I know you all heard it so often, but last time at the concert I was blown away! ;D
Uuuhhhh just like Val I like some songs of Golden heart also, like Je Suis Desole, A Night In Summer Long Ago.......and ......when he plays "I 'm The Fool" I am going to kiss him!!! :o Uuuhhhh of course on his cheeks!! LOL ......With this song I discovered Mark and his music and it's still one of my favourites! .........Ooohh don't tell Mark about the kiss, otherwise he won't play! ;D

I'm really not sure if I want to remain unspoiled or not - and even if I decided to stay unspoiled, I'm not sure if it's going to work. A lot of us are on Facebook and I'm sure I'd pick up some setlist infos from someone's page updates... I can stay away from Guy's site and this forum, but I have too many contacts on Facebook, I can't stay away there from the start of the tour to my first show. We could declare Facebook as a spoiler free zone... What do you think? Or maybe we can agree to post pictures only but no songtitles or youtube vids? Oh sorry, I think the very last part of that sentence is kind of redundant ;D

For me the same thing! If we want to remain unspoiled, we miss all the nice stuff about the tour (guy's forum/diary, this forum, my dutch MK Hyve) I don't think I am that strong ;) 8 april to 6 june is a long time... :o
-
Guy's very interesting new answer:
As you probably already know, Mark isn't into the extended arrangement thing anymore but we are doing quite a few of the new album tunes and they are sounding fab.
-
Diary update!! Pics!
-
Thanks, Dutchessy, I was about to say the same thing! ;D

I'm off Facebook and AMIT from April 8th to May 21st. :)

respect dusty..

Respect indeed. You can safely stay up to date with me, although I'll be attending 15th April. I'll tell you if there's a spoiler.

I think we should do a spoiler-section. So everyone can keep visiting us. Anything regarding the tour, songs, etc should be written down in the spoilersection.

It's fine in theory, but in practice somebody always gets excited about something or other without spoilers.
Trust me, abstinence is the only option. :) My second son is due two days before kick off anyway so I should be busy. :)

That's the reason I asked and not put the place here. It would be a big spoiler.

Of course we want to know. Maybe you could go there and film the rehearsals ;D

I am not in London so that would be a problem. But maybe for the people in London so they can try to get a glimpse?
If you really want to know I can mail it to you, I will not put this in the forum here,
-
It would be a big spoiler.
Why? What could have been spoiled?
I however compared the pics of Guy's 2008 rehearsal diary and can say that it is the same place! ;D ;D
LE
-
It is not the bray film studio as it was in 2008. It is a different film studio near London bridge.
-
Wasn't Bray Film studio only used for the production rehearsals? However. In my opinion we should leave them and let them rehearse their stuff. We all know what happens when MK and PC (!!!!!) get angry! :disbelief :lol :o ;D
LE
-
3 new pics in the latest diary... Very nice drumkit, with photoshop though ;)
-
Just got a spolier already on Facebook! Matt Rollins mentioned a track they are rehearsing.
Maybe I should just remove myself now...
-
Which one? Which one :P
LE
-
Dusty, maybe you should un-friend Matt and Guy and Danny etc. from facebook.
They will all spoil you.
And all of us anyway!
Or easier: let yourself spoil and don't go to any of the shows instead ;)
I'm not into this abstinence thing at all, actually.... ;D
-

Were you dreaming Dusty? I didn't get anything related from Matt himself or his Fan-account on Facebook but the fact that rehearsing week 2/3 is over now...
Tell us more please - spoil us! ;D
-
Come on, Dusty, what song? :)
-
he has already withdrawn.....
-
he has already withdrawn.....
Who? Dusty or Matt? ;D
-
I am friends with a fan from Argentina, she mentioned a song on her profile and Matt left a comment saying that he had just played it.
Don't want to mention it, unless we start a spoiler thread. :)
-
There's a PM option, too. What are you waiting for?
-
Exaaaactly. PM. Good idea!
I also want to know! But of course I respect your anti-spoiler-opinion.... :disbelief :lol
LE
-
Don't want to have to PM everybody!
I'll put it in the thread dedicated to the first tour date.
By the way, I'm pleased about it really, as it's a great song and not one that has been played over and over on the previous tours. :)
-
Arrrgh, I don't want to look but it's REALLY hard to resist!! :o
-
Don't want to have to PM everybody!
Am I everybody, Dusty? :(
It's really a spoiler to give us a hint and then force everybody into musical celibacy.... ;D

There is this question about how many songs they are rehearsing at Guy's forum, and he answered "32". And in the next post Guy assures us that he was not kidding. So this made me thinking: 32 songs? I tried and made a list, composed out of the last years' set lists including promotion tours since 2005. It is not a list I wish he would play but a list that I would probably expect from them to be played: And I discovered: 32 songs isn't that much. Coincidentally, there was an interview in a german newspaper today (Pforzheimer Zeitung). It contained not much new stuff. But he tells again that he doesn't like to play Money for Nothing anymore, but loves Romeo and Brothers more than ever. Nevertheless, I think they do probably rehearse them as well, perfectionists that they are:
Cannibals
why aye man
(Walk of Life)
what it is
sailing to philadelphia
true love will never fade
the fish and the bird
hill farmer's blues
romeo and juliet
sultans of swing
marbletown
song for sonny liston
postcards from paraguay
Done with Bonaparte
Donnegan's gone
Daddy's gone to knoxville
rudiger
speedway at nazareth
telegraph road
(Money For Nothing)
brothers in arms
our shangri-la
so far away
why worry
If this is goodbye
Get Lucky (was played during showcases 2009)
SPOILER SONG FROM MATT (I better edited it, I thought everybody knew this song already... :-*)
So there is place for five to seven new songs to be rehearsed. Of course this all is pure speculation because the could skip any song anytime, but I don't think that is very likely.
Rehearsal Speculations:
The Man's Too Strong (mentioned 2008)
On Every Street (mentioned 2003)
Portobello Belle (rehearsed 2001, my absolute live dream track! Imagine! Matt on accordion...)
and maybe one or two songs from KTGC that got played during Showcases, like
The Fizzy and The Still
Let It All Go
So this leaves place for maybe two to four other Get Lucky songs.
So, we will see what happens. I think the prospect of a absolute new, very varied concert isn't too great in my opinion... ::)
But I feel the tension coming more and more every day, counting the days! :D

The presidential muffin is not being buttered either. I hope you are wrong

I must admit, when i first saw that 32 songs had been rehearsed, i thought blimey!!
But when you look at it logically like LE, then it's probably just the usual suspects. :-\
Musn't grumble though. My excitement levels are already going through the roof.
Especially with Guy's & John's new albums, & the Alchemy release due before i see my 1st show. ;D

you forgot Silvertown blues...
-
Oh, yeah, I am also not grumbling in the slightest - it is also the mixture that makes the shows great! I still remember how much I enjoyed the Emmylou show because of its unusal run - no division in "songs before sultans and songs after", and not the break after the two long songs as usual - it was a totally new MK concert experience! And putting out an old song like Cannibals as an opener was a great idea back in 2008, too! So I am really curious, and
I don't think I can stand it and keep away from the first news after the tour has kicked off... :disbelief
If he plays "Before Gas & TV", everything is fine with me, did I mention that? :lol
LE
-
you forgot Silvertown blues...
Yes, Pottel, I was indeed thinking about it but it was the same as with "Tunnel of Love" - the only statements we know from MK about these songs are
quite negative, so I did not put it into my list. But it is a speculation anyway and it claims no completeness. I was just trying to handle the big figure
of 32 rehearsed songs and found out it is not such a big figure at all - MK has a really awesome and impressive catalogue - and with astonishing high quality I might add...

What is your feeling about this "PC Audiolabs/British Grove recording system"?
This time we could have a recording for a live CD?

Well they recorded every gig from the last tour but MK decided he didn't want our money. :-\

Or it'll make one helluva expensive GF compilation CD for the musicians of this decade's upcoming tours.
Money isn't an issue for these lads :)

Otherwise he could have spent it for a boat...or an island. So I'm quite happy with that recording system.

Guy's answer to the TOL 1 april fool by Pottel:
No, that's rubbish. I never said anything of the sort. He actually categorically didn't want to play that tune as it was suggested by one of the band. ---You Got Me
So.. The band suggested to play TOL, but Mark didn't want it... That realy realy sucks... :'(
He also said:
As for oldies, there were a few brief suggestions met with a short, sharp 'no'.
Come on... Hey plays the same setlist over and over again and refuses some old song suggestions... It's no fair :'( :P :disbelief >:(
-
Just reading the good Doc's responses to certain questions regarding sets lists (Pottel's TOL question was a classic, but there was also one about golden oldies that nearly made it) the answers given certainly make MK out to be a bit of a grumpy so and so! im sure he has his reasons and of course we can do nothing but except them...but even so.... :disbelief

Hello man, yes, before asking Guy this matter.. I was crossing my fingers. :'(

I think MK is really becoming a grumpy old man. Last tour he did some M&G's but at the one I attended (Paris) he really didn''t look very interested in doing so. He played some songs, signed CD's (only one per person as we were stricktly told by PC), we could take a picture with him (no smile at all) and went off as fast as he could. Same with the afterparty in London. The whole band was there, MK's wife and some of his children were there, even his mum was there. But guess what ... no MK showed up at all.
So I think we don't have to expect any kind of things like this anymore. ::) :'(
He reminded me a little about those girls working in the real cheap supermarkets, sitting there, having you paying your groceries, chewing gum and no I don't want to be nice, I don't want to smile, because I am paid for this job, not for being kind or smile.

Very well said Ingrid!
I totally agree with you, it`s so strange, the rest of the band is having fun and he`s is the grumpy old man.
Not too nice if you ask me. :(
-
He was very nice to me though in 2008. He stopped his Mercedes in the middle of a very busy Newcastle street to say hello and ask how I was! :) It was a bit embarrassing, because it was rush hour and all the traffic was hooting their horns behind him! :o Danny told me some time later that he thought he recognized me from somewhere!
-
Hey, Ingrid, these are quite clear words, and most of your opinions are shared by me. You know, we are fans, so we wear certain "fan"-glasses, if you
know what I mean. Of course we want to see it in our own way. But let's face it: MK is just doing what he always did for more than 30 years now. The way he produces his records has become a certain routine, no surprises, and every single record since RPD is more and more irrelevant for the catalogue. And the same with his shows: He is not really that fresh anymore, but I don't blame him for that, he is 60 now! But when Guy answered last year: "MK is not caring for fans. Why should he?" Or when thinking of MK's refuse to give us live recordings, the photo policy stuff and last time on tour when there were stories that the Merc passed the waiting fans - all fits together. It is just a job for him it seems - done to avoid boredom. I don't deny him that he is really into his song writing, but hey, there were times when he really tried something... Now every track is an echo of some other older, better, recording... We are on the last leg of his career, of course, we must consider that, he won't play (live) music for more than 5, 7 or 10 years the most in this extent. So we should be happy enough with what he have today. But it would be easier if he was a little - friendlier, more open, and when the ladies were able to see that "sexy grin" more often... ;)
BTW, Paul Crockford is a guy that I personally think of as the perfect impersonation of this "new" MK. I am not looking forward to the beginning of the new shows, when he comes up on the stage and reads his policy stuff... :-\
However, MK's playing is still awesome, his voice is still unique and his band is one of the best ones around. So there are enough reasons for looking forward to the beginning tour. And I do! In fact I am in a very hysteric mood if I think about spoiling or not spoiling, that is the question the mo....
No offence meant, I might say in advance, and I also do not want to spoil this forum or anything for anybody. But Ingrid expressed some feelings
that I exactly felt the same in the last few months, and I want to support her!

He gave me his VERY sexy smile too, complete with the sweet little gap! ;D
-
Thanks love, I couldn't explain it better than you just did. And yes, that sexy grin is someting I want to see. And yes, the Merc passed me some times as well. I remember Martina and me waiting at the venue in Basel (showcase) It was only the two of us, but he didn't stop, it would cost him only 30 seconds to sign one CD each. Also passing by at Brighton, but other bandmembers even got out of the car to sign!
I really look forward to the tour, doing a nice 13 gigs this time, but I really hope he doesn't overreact too much like last years. We all are paying a lot of money for tickets, travelling, hotels etc. Some respect for the fans is not too much in my opinion. But playing and singing is still genious and we are lucky to have Guy paying attention to the fans.
-
My impression is that very often artists tend to be quite sensitive. This is necessary because they are able to express sceneries and/or feelings through their art (very often in a subtle way), that may be acting or music or whatever. In some cases this is linked to an introvert and withdrawn behaviour in private life. You get to hear quite often, that the actor XY is very different compared to his/her appearance in the movies or onstage. So they are "acting" in a certain way while in private life they tend to be shy and contemplative.
So my guess is that he still loves to play and to record - he very often said that in the past, but he doesn't like the hype about the person MK and wants to be a person that can walk along the streets without getting recognized. A lot of songs deal with describing other people's life and their feelings, dreams and hopes. All these little dramas in life.
Or maybe I'm just putting lipstick on the pig but when I think of how passionate MK talks about music and guitars, I think that he loves what he is doing and he justs wants to lead a quiet life when he isn't on stage.
-
I have to say the first time I met MK he was very relaxed, from all the people in the row waiting for an autograph, he pointed at me and asked me to come first. What a day. ;D
But I want my M&G!!!! :lol That would be the 2nd time meeting MK. :D
-
I agree with you Justme, and I fully respect his private life and all. But that doesn't mean that he has to act disrespectfull to fans. He didn't in the past. But it's becoming more clear every year that he wants to make music and even want to play live, but he doesn't want to be involved at all with his fans. He should not forget that his millions are made possible by the same fans. And he has to remember too that if we nowadays don't buy his CD's and don't go to his concerts, his fun in making CD's and performing on stage (for only a handful of people) will fade away very quickly.
I think every single one is very respectfull towards MK. To show that: In the streets of Edinburgh (during the tour 2008) I was looking into some shop, when I turned around to go on walking through the shoppingstreet I literally bumped to Glenn Worf. I said hi to him and moved on, just 10 meters further MK was standing there waiting for Glenn to return. I just did as if I didn't see him. He was in private time, walking around the city.
For me: doing a M&G every now and then, do some CD-signing belongs to his job. Not when he is walking around in the city but when he enters the venue for the soundcheck a quick stop for his true fans isn't too much.

I do agree with you, when he does such things as a M&G and it is in my view part of the whole business, he should be a little more friendly towards his guests. Perhaps he feels very embarrassed when everyone tells him how beautiful his music is - I don't know.

I agree Ingrid, that fans are mostly respectful of MK. When we were at Hay-on-Wye he was walking around the festival ground amongst the crowds with his wife and daughter all weekend and no-one approached him as far as I could see. When I was in the library tent buying Kitty's book, he was standing only a few feet away from me and I would have loved to have approached him, but he was talking to someone and I think it would have been an intrusion. I actually did bump into him in the tent (literally), but didn't notice who it was until my husband told me! ;D

Uuuhhh did I say baby of the family........well I better say a 51 year old baby then! ;D ...I have been to one concert in 2008, and will attend 2 concerts with hubby this year.
Of course I would LOOOOVE to meet Mark and the others! I envy all the people who met them already, but I have to be patient and perhaps wait 10 or 20 years as other did before I will meet him ......OR ........I have to think about a plan to get Mark's attention!!! Perhaps some ladies still remember the wonderful plan we were talking about at MKnews a few years ago? ROFL ......I think it was something about wearing sexy tight t'shirts and flashing in front of Mark? :o ..............I am not sure anymore but it might be that those messages were deleted, because they were too funny! ;D

never heard it before!
Shame there aren't M&G this time but to be honest, although I appreciated being able to shake his hand last time, I didn't enjoy the experience so much. Seeing him go round signing autographs and posing for photos, reminded me of a circus animal being shown around.
I'd love to have a lion in my back garden or a dolphin in my swimming pool, these animals are truly beautiful, but they don't belong there, they belong in the wild. MK belongs on stage! (and in the studio)
(now, for the drool gang, how about MK in my swimming pool? ;D)

LoveExpresso -- No, I have not met MK.
I've been a fan since 1978, but I've had only one chance to meet him -- I was inches away from him -- but he looked so tired, I just couldn't bother him.
He did wave back to me in 1985 at Chicago Poplar Creek concert, just after this picture was taken. He was looking up into the crowd of 27,000 but saw me waving my arm side to side from the fifth row. Everyone around me was sitting down. He smiled, I smiled, he waved by waggling his fingers with his hand still up to his forehead, I waved, he smiled, I smiled.

I have met Guy, Glenn, Richard, Matt and Danny.
Picture is from 2005 Vegas, taken by Matt's stepdad.

Thanks, that is indeed a very nice picture! You really can see how friendly and decent those guys are... It lifts my heart to know that MK surrounds himself
with such nice guys. I think the band "chemistry" is better than ever.
But of course it must have been a real pleasure for them to get photographed with such a delightful and friendly lady! ;) :-*
All the best!

Great picture, knopfling! You all look very happy! :)

I was very lucky in 2008 to be the runner up in a Guy Fletcher comp (Winner was Waterline Man)
I won a ticket to the venue of my choice, & a M&G. ;D :o
I went to see him at Newcastle, and was lucky enough to go backstage before the gig.
I got 2 handshakes and an autograph.
I count myself very lucky!!!
No photo with Mark was allowed though. (PC announced this at the start) :-\
I will cherish that very special moment for the rest of my life. A true dream come true. :)
Guy also arranged for me an aftershow party pass in Newcastle, which i couldn't attend, so he sorted it for me at the RAH instead. But like Ingrid said, everyone was there, except Mark. (Think he had a cold that night).
Cheers BBB
-
Thanks, LE and SuperVal. It was a great time, at least for me.
All the guys were pretty nice. I'd met Guy at Red Rocks two nights before for just a second. In the 2008 tour, I ran across Guy, Richard, Matt and Danny and talked with them for several minutes, and they were all unbelievably nice again.
Glenn was exceptionally nice in 2005 at Vegas, the only time I met him. We talked about MK for probably five minutes. He sounded like a big fan himself. We were talking about the night before, in Salt Lake City, when MK messed up the words on Telegraph Road. We were both surprised he did, but then not that surprised when you think of all the intricate lyrics and music he has to keep in his head every night. Glenn said he could never do that. I really enjoyed the long conversation with Glenn. Most guys would just go off and talk to someone else, but he kept talking with me.
I also met Guy's wife that '05 night. She was really nice, too.
-
I have been lucky enough to have met both MK & CR & if you were to ask me which of them was the most approachable I would have to say it was CR. I had met him previously in 2006,when he posed for a picture with me but I went to see him in Dublin in 2008 on the road to hell & back tour & when the gig finished we went around to the stage door with about another 100 people,Chris came out after a while & signed a few autographs etc but there was no way he could have signed everything for everyone & he apologised for not being able to do so - some guy even gave him some songs that he had written for him to look at ::)I suppose everyone has an off day but I must admit I have always found CR to be courteous.
In relation to MK,I think he's been there done that & although he loves writing & performing he's sick of the publicity that goes with it,the media / fan thing is a pain in the a***e to him more than anything at this stage. If you look at his interviews he looks uncomfortable & from his body language he'd rather be somewhere else .As Guy said the meen'n'greets were for invited guests & competition winners & if you look at it the meet'n'greets didnt happen (for competition winners) unless there was invited guests (ie the sponsors) there - I'll take Dublin for example,no meet'n'greets for any of the past tours!!! I agree that MK could be a bit more curtious to the die harders that stand outside venues for an autograph in the wind & rain but the way he probably looks at it is that he provides music & its our choice as to whether we buy it,go to the gigs & stand outside in the rain but we just have to realise that he will make up his own mind as to what he wants to do. All along I have thought that PC was a bit OTT but as time has gone by I have come to realise that he is only doing what he has been told by MK,which cant be an easy task either :o :o
-
I knew Fieneke would jump on that one! ;D
Dear Self Appointed President of the Fletcherettes, you were right! ;D We all need some fun and a good laugh, especial now we all get excited about the start of the tour in a few days! :P
Dear Knopfling, what a beautiful picture you showed us! I LOVE it and you all look wonderful! I can imagine how you felt standing there between those men! .......I am not sure IF I could say something whenever I would meet them because of the nerves and language! LOL I sure would be afraid to say something wrong or stupid, while I know that the guys are very nice and modest!
Waterline Man, I agree with the things you said! ;)

I just wanted to take a picture of the guys together and never would have asked them to pose with me, but Matt's stepdad insisted on me getting into the group and letting him take the picture. I'm so glad he did.
Fieneke, I can't believe I haven't sent that picture to you before. All the guys were very easy to approach and talk with, so I don't think you'd have any problem. I'm sure they're used to people whose native language isn't English since they tour much of the world. I was just so pleased by Glenn because he kept bringing up new topics and keeping the conversation going when I'd have been happy with "hello."
-
Linda,
How Lucky you were to pose with those legendary band members !! It was a great picture. I would be thrilled to meet and say "hello" to them. Most thrilled of course to meet MK. How did you manage to meet them ?
BTW, Glen looks very tall.
-
Sweet, yes, I felt quite lucky to be able to meet them.
The reason all the families of the band members were out in the hallway that night was that they were supposed to go upstairs to a meet-and-greet, but it was canceled, so the band members came out into the hallway to see their friends and family. I just happened to be standing around there before the concert because the entrance to the upstairs and backstage was there. They've remodeled the place now, so I don't know if those opportunities would still be there.
In the 2008 tour, Guy, Danny, Richard and Matt came out into the casino several hours before the concert, and no one recognized them but me.
Yes, Glenn is fairly tall. I am 5-foot-9, so I'm guessing he's maybe around 6-4 or 6-5.

I have never even come close to meeting MK or any of the band members. When I see them on May 7, I will have front row center seats for the very first time. I can't even imagine how I'm going to feel being that close to him. I'm sure I'll be on another galaxy for two hours :P :P :P
(I'll try not to embarrass myself by drooling in public :-[ :-[)

JoanZimm, I've never had front-row center seats, so I am jealous. I had front row way to the side in front of a speaker once, in '08, and that was great. May 7 is my best friend's birthday, so I'm sure it will be a great day. ENJOY!
-
During my two 2008 shows it was the first time that I was really in the middle of the bunch of people in front of the stage. In fact I was directly under
his microphone in Munich and Hamburg, and I had rather a view of his boots than of the rest of him... :lol
(http://localhero.free.fr/2bgal/img/20080505/HPIM5389_filtered.jpg)
This time, I am sitting in the first row for the first time, also, in Hamburg again. I am sure it will be great! Basically because I do not have to keep watching when it is time to rush in front of the stage from let's say, row 8 or something, but BEING THE FIRST ONE TO RUSH this time, my plan is to start a first try after the third song! ;D
So expectations are high and the strategy is worked out!
Picture was taken by our Maggie, I hope she doesn't mind that I use it!

LOL LE, you could have grabbed his ankle ;D Or the towel... I still have his towel... But from the Cologne show ;D

LE, that picture is hysterical. I never noticed that he wore his jeans so long. Of course, his feet and legs are sexy, so it's a great photo in my opinion. :P
Knopfling, seeing him close this time will make up for the 2006 ATRR concert in NYC. My seat was so far in the back, he was the size of an ant :(

So Guy, How did last night go? another quick Q-does Mark always play "Song for Sonny Liston" sitting down and is there a reason for it?
No, actually we've rehearsed that standing up.
-
Hmm, there's "a tiny setlist change"... ???
-
Could you PLEASE BE more sensitive about spoilers thank you very much!!! >:(
Heck, it must be possible to continue reading "normal" threads and your FB page without getting spoiled :disbelief
I know this is the GF tour diary thread but please, put a spoiler warning in the title. There are gullible people like me who simply click on it...

Sorry! But it isn't a spoiler...

I thought that question to Guy implied they played *** last night... ???
Well, anyway, I think I'll simply stay off AMIT. Something always slips somewhere.
EDITED to remove the song title.

Guy just said in his forum in reply to someone complaining about Bonaparte: "there will be more changes too. Oh what fun."
Looks like we're in for a more varied setlist this time.
-
He also wrote that he (Guy) chooses the setlists!? ??? Never heard him say that before, though I guess we always knew that he was the most important one in that regard but Mark. But he has always stated that Mark has full control. And remember, after the first show he mentioned that he made a note of a setlist change...
-
So, thank Guy for Bonaparte :-\
-
Guy also said in his entry for Vancouver that they discussed the setlist again after the Vancouver show so perhaps this confirms more changes for the Portland show. :P
-
You all know the one who complained :P

I agree with you Ingrid! ;D

may be silly old me, but, have you noticed as well that the general feedback, mostly based on hearsay, is way more positive then during the KTGC tour? as much as i liked most of the KTGC (don-'t get me started about any live version of Hill FB.) still somehow this one seems to be received in a more positive way. anyone wants the setlist? come and visit www.amarkintime.org/forum
this is a better tour, period.

new post from richard:
Vancouver, British Columbia 9 April, 2010
This afternoon we boarded a handsome Embraer Legacy, our touring jet through North America. This plane will wing us from the upper Pacific to the Atlantic coast and all stops between. The power and surety of these executive planes never fails to impress me every time we take off, I've never felt safer. Dianne will be looking after us onboard and proved herself with this first hop to Vancouver from Seattle. In just 20 minutes she set up, served and cleared a delicious lunch of sushi that had probably been swimming in the Pacific water earlier that morning. We are officially in tour mode now.
We arrived in beautiful Vancouver on a picture perfect day, clear skies, billowy white clouds and rugged mountains capped with snow, It was a half hour drive to Queen Elizabeth Theatre bringing back memories of when we were here 2 years ago, the various eateries, watering holes and bike rides through Stanley Park. In '08 we based from the city for several days but this time we simply flew in for the show and left immediately after.
Queen Elizabeth Theatre was the site of our final show of the 2005 Shangri-La Tour and now five years later is the spot for the second show of this tour. It has capacity seating of 2,900, modern, clean and comfortable. The crew loves theatres like this due to the ease of load in/out and there's plenty of room for the equipment cases so they can remain backstage during the show and don't have to be reloaded back in the trucks once they've been unpacked. We ran through several things during sound check, continuing to make minor adjustments to our ear monitor mixes as well as various technical issues. The set was changed from the night before to try out a few new songs then it was time to clear the stage and open the house. I watched Pieta Brown and Beau Ramsey's opening set, enjoying them both very much then time to get changed and do our turn. The Vancouver audience, as always, was fantastic, hanging on every word then responding with great enthusiasm ... a performer couldn't ask for a better crowd.
Our first runner of the tour, a wild dash off stage to waiting cars that returned us to the Legacy for a 50 minute, Chinese food flight to Portland where we'll spend the night and play tomorrow, The one thing I always forget about the beginning of these tours is getting used to standing up on stage for 2 hours every night. It usually takes a few shows to get the stage legs back and I got to the room tonight completely knackered .... straight to bed.
So long,

Period? Only the US leg? :o
-
I think Guy means that as they are playing mostly the same songs of the KTGC tour, they are playing it better, and with Tim and Mike the arrangements are really nice in comparations with the 2008 arrangements (two musicians playing aditional instruments instead of just one ;-p)

Hull
7th May 2010
So do we have Alan Shearer to thank for the fact that MFN is off the set-list for good now (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0h6eog0wMw)? What about "Going Home", though - that used to make a brilliant wrap-up after each show.
yes, but wait till you hear the new ending tune
So Far from the Clyde, please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :lol
-
Oh, in my view Guy is alluding to the actual ending tune, Piper To The End. Nevermind, it's great as well.
Maybe So Far From The Clyde will reappear in the 2020 World Tour! ;)
But I still do struggle with the fact that PTTE and SFFTC are quite sad songs, Going Home is a little bit more uplifting - especially prior the post-concert-blues.
-
Aha, I see. And that fan is from Kingston Upon Hull, not somewhere in the US.
-
I agree that Piper and So Far are both very sad. And they are beautiful. I would rather here the band play Piper as a closer than So Far, simply because there seems to be hope in Piper, and So Far is absolutely the end of something. And I think I'd rather walk out of the concert with that slight feeling of hope, sad though the song may be. I would like to hear So Far from the Clyde earlier in the evening, following by something wonderfully rousing, like Speedway or even happy/optimistic, like Get Lucky.

I'm totally with you on that. And I guess that MK is aware of the impact these song might have and therefore puts a lot of effort in creating the setlist. The same 'rules' seem to apply to the sequence of tracks on his albums.

Agree with you. Wild Theme is also possible. Not very 'uplifting', but also a perfect 'closer'. As I stated earlier, no MK/DS-concert is complete without one of the Local Hero-tunes as the closing tune.
In my opinion I'd rather see them playing some big hits as encores. Although we've heard them many times, BIA and SFA are perfect encores. Same for MFN or some other 'big' ones. A lot of diehards would prefer other songs, but a big part of the audience are 'tourists', and they expect big hits. It's better to play a (beautiful) song like Piper in the main set.
Regards,
Lars B.

I know what you are saying, but that's just not who MK is. Personally I don't like hits in the end anymore. It's so predictable... So 80ies in a way. No, place the hits all around the set, and end with a song that gives the audience something to think about. That's the recipe of the 2000's. (And starting to be a bit predictable, that too ;))
-
I think Piper is a great closer, well judging from clips and setlists. What annoys me is that SFA is still in the set. Oh well.

Yes, he should vary the classics more
