They answered, members of markknopfler.com will have presale as usual

I think there will be different presales, the mk.com, the virginemi, and maybe, others
-
I'm just want to add this information from MK.com to this thread:
all MarkKnopfler.com pre-order customers will receive a complimentary future live recording from the forthcoming tour. More information on that and how our customers can take advantage of this very special offer will be provided in the coming weeks.
They are talking in singular... "recording", like they are going to offer just one to everybody.

As they did by the past. Nothing new to me.

If I understand it correctly, Guy said Danny is back in the touring band.

Yes, I understand the same.

Yes, I understand the same.
If he is in the band as a percussionist and not replacing IanTo as drummer, that would be something very interesting, indeed!!
-
Pretty big touring band then.

Is presale even a good thing? Last tour I got tickets in presale through MK.com for Amsterdam, I was placed in row 20, while others in regular sale were placed in rows in front of me. Tour before that I got tickets in row 6 in regular sale while presale ticket holders were behind me in row 15.

in general we were always better of with the MK.com tickets, the one or the other exception can be excepted.

Presale is very tricky thing...
MK.com has reservation for, lets say, the first 20 rows in a venue. So the fact that you buy the tickets in MK.com doesn't means you have tickets in the better row, in row 1, for example. It depends in many factors, like how fast are you buying, for example.
Apart of this, sometimes the venues has agreements with other sellers or sponsors, like vodafone, amex etc, and the venue reserve the better rows (let´s say from 1 to 10) to that sponsors, some others (10-20 rows) to MK.com and the rest in general sale...
Or, some venues reserve just rows 10-20 to MK.com and the rest in general...
Every venue has its agreements with MK.com and other retailers and sometimes is difficult to know what to do. For example, 2013 tour, there were four presales for RAH at the same time, MK.com, ticketmaster, ticketline and RAH site, and each one had their owns seats reserved. I wanted seats at the stalls and it was difficult to find which of the four had that tickets!

Yes sounds great news , bet Ingrid will be happy she has missed danny's drumming
-
Very interesting indeed that Danny will be back. Now that we have Nigel firmly installed too does this mean that the folkies are on their way out? I cannot criticise them and they have added a great deal to Mark's music over the years but I think a change in direction is needed. This would please me no end and shake up the set too.
-
Do you think John McCusker and Mike McGoldrick will be part of the touring band ?
-
Do you think John McCusker and Mike McGoldrick will be part of the touring band ?
No. The problem with OES tour was that it was all too big, including the huge band and not just the entourage. I think with Nigel now installed and Danny rejoining, Mark will not want such a big band again.

I don't think so either. I'm very fond of the folkies, but we are in dire need of a change this time and a whole new set list! :)
-
Do we know if the folkies were involved in the recoding of the album this time around? I remember they were busy with Celtic Connections and some other stuff during a lot of the studio time. If not it would make sense for a change and bodes well for a set list revision.

Yes, they are amongst the musicians named on the album.
-

Yes they were.
-
But is Danny back as the drummer or percussionist. I can’t believe that he will drop Ianto, unless he’s not available.
-
I think Danny is back to play percussion, like on the new album. I would not be so sure about Mike and John leaving, there also flutes and pipes on the new album and lots on previous albums.....
-
I think John and Mike stay in the touring band. They must play Marbletown, remember?

Great to hear that Danny is back. Maybe they’ll do calling Elvis again, the OES version...
-
Will the girls singing backing vocals on tour ?
-
The problem with the folkies is that they should have not stayed more than four the 2006 and 2008 tours.
I hope for a stripped back to 2005 band format with 3 backing singers and listen to what they deliver...

You can't have 3 backing singers for just a couple of songs, for that you have to reinvent the whole set and arrangements.
Now... Do you really believe in that? :lol :lol :lol

Hope is not believing but that is a start.
Regarding the backing singer, the band is already doing backing so not a revolution but an evolution.

The 2006 tour didn't have Mike and John in the band - it was Stuart Duncan. In 2008 it was only John - Mike joined him in 2010.
-
I would love to have Robbie in the band as well. Preferably in addition to Richard. (Incl. Nigel and Danny, without the folkies)
What a band that would be! Would really make it possible to shake the setlist up!
-
Is Ianto out if Danny gets in ?

I don't make it a question of person but a matter of style.
IMHO 2010 would have been better without folkies and was really the start of the Mark Knopfler's Comfort Zone Touring Band.
-
Is Ianto out if Danny gets in ?
That would really surprise me. Ianto on the drums and Danny on percussion i would think....
-
oh I do hope he doesn't go back too the synth straits days!! , folkies all the way for me please!!! , just want some blues , folk and blues and jazz please for me !! lol
enjoy what ever setlist he plays really when im there (if its well played )

Same band of that tour plus Danny Cummings ok percussion and Tom Walsh on trumpet...
They are going to need extra large stage...

Oh, I didn't want to wake up to this. You're the bearer of bad news Val. :disbelief :disbelief :disbelief :disbelief
Hopefully they won't be overused this time around but it looks like Marblebore is still keeping it's place in the set then and maybe not as many changes as I had hoped for.
-
The touring band will be the same as last time with the addition of Danny on percussion and Tom Walsh on Trumpet.
So i think many news songs from the new album and always 5 or 6 DS classics plus songs like What it is, STP and Speedway. Perhaps Border Reiver again :think

I'm ready to let Marbletown go now, dmg. I have more than enough recordings to keep me happy! ;D Maybe it will be dropped from the next set list and something new for the folkies to get their teeth into! :)

Border Reiver, Privateering, Haul Away and Piper to the End are plenty thank-you!
I think with so many musicians on tour we might see the folkies going on and off the stage (mostly off). ;D

Already looking forward to the first concert with live real time setlist being dropped here.. or even better a live recording who someone put up here... That was fun!!

By the way, sax ant trumpet together can create sort of backing singers effect, so it's a clever move from economical point of view lol.

Where do you think you're going with David on 2nd guitar ....
-
Without having heard the rest of the new album, I would go for this as a prediction:
01 - Border Reiver
02 - Good On You Son
03 - So Far From The Clyde
04 - Cannibals
05 - Hill Farmer's Blues
06 - Romeo And Juliet
07 - Your Latest Trick
08 - Sultans of Swing
09 - Rudiger (Or song from the new album)
10 - Boom, Like That
11 - Silver Eagle
12 - On Every Street
13 - Brothers In Arms
14 - Are We In Trouble Now
15 - So Far Away
16 - The Long Highway
I don't know if Mark would shake up the setlist this way, but do you guys think it's realistic?
-
Same band of that tour plus Danny Cummings ok percussion and Tom Walsh on trumpet...
They are going to need extra large stage...
This is a surprising message.
-
Where do you think you're going with David on 2nd guitar ....
With so many people on stage i think a lot off songs from the first 2/3 DS records will not make it to the setlist. Only sultans.

Songs with trompet / sax.
Quickly out of my head with looking at all the titles of the tracks from DS and MK :
DS
Your latest trick (intro trompet/rest sax)
On every street (suprano sax + Percussion)
My parties (sax + percussion)
Planet of New Orleans (sax)
Solid Rock live (On the Night) 8)
Private Investigation live (On the Night)
Ride Across the River (Sax + Trompet)
Portobelle belle (Sax)
Two Young Lovers (Sax)
Solo
El Macho (Flugelhorn/Bugle)
The Last Laugh (trompet and sax?)
One More Matinee (Flugelhorn/Bugle)
Coyote (trompet)
In the sky (sax)
Radio City Serenade (Trompet)
Dream Of the Drowned Submariner (not a sax or trompet, its a Clarinet but I put it on this list)
River Towns (Sax)
Wherever I Go (Sax + trompet)
Good on you son (sax)
Going Home (sax)
Metroland (intro trompet)
If this is Goodbye (Trompet)
Behind With the Rent (Trompet)
About percussion, then I have to start listening again :P.
The first ones comes to mind is ofcourse Calling Elvis, Water of Love, Punish the Monkey or Summer of Love.
But to have both (sax/trompet and percussion) I think I only know the 2 I've written in the list :think
So correct me if I'm wrong or if I forgot something ;) :think
-
Ride across the river
sax/trumpet
Portobello belle, sax
-
You can also add Two Young Lovers at the list of sax songs
-
It's not sax what matters but trumpet. There was sax already in the last tours. What's new is the trumpet...
-
On "El Macho" (and on "One More Matinee" too) it's not a Trumpet but a Flugelhorn.
LE
-

maybe with the horns section like Anastasio arrangement :hmm
-
To my ears there’s trumpet on One More Matinée, and how fantastic would it be to hear that terrific song live. Also Tom Walsh played trumpet on Wherever I Go. And there’s trumpet on If This is Goodbye, also a good one for next tour. And there’s Say Too Much, but they can leave that one out if you ask me. On the other hand the Metroland Theme (instrumental) and A Walk In Paris would be nice, though there’re not specifically trumpet tunes. Behind With The Rent is also great and includes trumpet, but I don’t believe Mark would be able to sing that one properly nowadays.
-
On "El Macho" (and on "One More Matinee" too) it's not a Trumpet but a Flugelhorn.
LE
Oh yeah, your totally right! I changed it, and updated the list.. But I guess Tom Walsh can play also Flugelhorn ;D :P
-
Don't forget, that this "horn section" can also act in a sort of "backing singers" mode, so you can throw basically any song with many voices in.
-
Maybe Tom and Nigel are only on for a few single tracks.
...in order to not expect a rather unrealistic complete overhaul of the setlist and then being disillusioned and killing Guy again.
-
Since Ktgc tour in 2008 that was the first major change regarding setlist, the repertoire needs a good shake. It's about time.
According to Guy, there are plans to sell the live recordings again.
-
YEAH!!!! 8)
-
I'm happy, but I would like to have a cover album. I go to the store and buy. But it is probably impossible.
-
Don't forget, that this "horn section" can also act in a sort of "backing singers" mode, so you can throw basically any song with many voices in.
For shure true! But atleast they have to play a few songs where the trompet and the sax are kind of importent. Otherwise it doesn’t make sence to get a trompetist and a sax player right? :think. With only Nigel they also played some more “sax” (Your latest trick, On every Street (sopransax)) songs or intros. But ofcourse I could be wrong ;)
Cool to have the live recordings again! 8)
But that does probably also mean that we can kind of forget an official live release (Dvd, Blu-ray or cd).
Ah well atleast a lot of live recordings ;D

Maybe now we also get 4/5 minute trompet solos :lol
-
Well I bet that Mark will use them in an unexpected way regarding what I read here. The studio version is one thing but the live arrangement is another, especially for songs recorded years ago. Mark had time to change his mind about "how" to perform them, so maybe some songs will follow the standard rules (YLT reproducing the BIA album intro?) but others will be performed quite differently.
-
Just going back to the live recordings and a question of Guy's forum asked by someone remarking that their quality has become worse since 2010. Guy answered with this reassuring reply that bodes well for the forthcoming recordings:
"Most of that is out of my hands but yes, the last tour the live mixes weren't great. This tour will be different."

I asked the same thing but he didn’t want to answer lol, anyway, I think that it becomes obvious and I’m pretty sure we’ll have a great mixing for the coming tour.

I wonder how much it would take the tour to be announced... first dates for Tracker tour were announced on September 16th 2014, Privateering ones on August 27th 2012...

I would've guessed just after the release too, however looking at these dates from Jbaent it appears the previous tours were announced before the album release. I suppose they can release the dates well before tickets actually going on sale mind you.
-
I personally hope they will wait as long as possible, because I'm very busy now and buying tickets is, like Ingrid or pratical chair says, a millitary operation.
-
If they use the same strategy like some previous tours tickets will go on sale before the album is out.
I guess his ticketsales are not depending on a new album. They will sell anyway.
-
However, last tours were announced little by little, for example Spanish concerts were announced in two times, firsts one to be announced were the German and British ones if I recall correctly...
-
I really do hope this time they will announce all the dates at the same day!!

To be honest, the way MK or his management does this is very rare...
Name me one band who puts out a European tour in 4 / 5 different announcements :think

Maybe MK doesn't sell as much as we think and he has a cache. Some promoters would have to work real hard to get concerts closed and that's why dates would be announced in different batches, because it might be complicate to close deals with promoters and cities...

Maybe MK doesn't sell as much as we think and he has a cache. Some promoters would have to work real hard to get concerts closed and that's why dates would be announced in different batches, because it might be complicate to close deals with promoters and cities...
Somehow i found that hard to believe, the part that promoters have to work hard to get concerts closed. I believe MK can be booked in every main city in Europe with a venue up to 15.000 people. Put it on sale 6 months before tour starts, use internet and tv spots in some countries to promote the concert and in the end it will be close to or be sold out...
-
In Spain for example he doesn't do more than 8.000, and that would be a maximum...
-
Okay i understand but then again his name is big enough to sell tickets for concerts in cities like Madrid Barcelona Amsterdam Antwerp Berlin Paris Munchen Rome Lisbon Krakow Oslo Kopenhagen Zurich.
But if they book him for 10 concerts in Germany only like on the Tracker tour then understand there is some work to be done for the promoters............ ???

do not get the second sentence, the german concerts do not exclude the possibility for the other cities?
also, let us not forget our south american, asian pacific (including kiwi and oz) here they have a right to complain, us,....not really

MK sales are very good in some countries and just decent in others. Local promoters usually before to hire a MK concert use to see the figures of the last concerts of MK in similar venues from previous tours to think if it worths in economical terms. Sometimes the promoters see that what PCM ask is higher that what they would do with selling tickets so they search for sponsors to help with the economic part. That search of money is what takes time and what makes it costs more time to close the deals.
MK sells better in some countries than in others. For example, in Spain MK used to play in the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona, with a capacity of 17.000 people. They used to place the stage in the middle of the arena leaving half venue empty behind, so the capacity is reduced to about 8.000 or even less as long as they put chairs in the arena, 8.000 would be for standing arena, with chairs that capacity is again reduced and even that, the venue is not sold out. You have a clear example of numbers here. An MK concert costs the same to promoters if you have a venue of 7.000 people than a venue for 15.000, so the promoter makes less money, and sometimes there is a big risk of losing money.
Avoiding that chance of losing money is what takes times, sometimes a lot.
Last tours, MK in Barcelona played at the Poble Espanyol square, with an standing capacity of 5.000 and it didn't sold out either... that concert is usually one of the last from the Spanish batch to be announced, because it's not easy with that number of people attending to cover what the concert costs, and you have to close many deals to make sure you don't loose money with it.
-
With more musicians involved in the show, the cache should rise. Maybe higer prices of the tickets?
-

That's one of the things local promoters could do to not loose or win money with the concert, put higher prices... but higher prices would mean less sales as well, MK is not Dire Straits.

I would pay more if they had two fewer in the band! Guess who. Go on! ;D
Prices have gone up every tour though and with a larger band it is a certainty they will increase this time.
I was just hoping for small venues, small tour à la Golden Heart but I can't see it as I don't think it would be economically viable. :-\

Not with this band... maybe if Glenn, Jim and Richard leaves their spots and Robbie, Marcus and other keyboard player joins, the costs will be very reduced... I'm sure that the Americans are very expensive musicians to have them on tour, as they are very demanded sessions players that will loose many sessions while on tour.

Bigger venues. Example and not a good one i know..... He can play the O2 in London or he can do RAH 4/5 times..... Another one: Belgium, Lotto Arena or Vorst National, both have about 8000 people or he can play Sportpaleis who can have about 20.000.
Or is this something promoters do not take in consideration?

You have to fill a big venue to make money. Usually big venues are more expensive.
Probably with people that went one night to the O2 MK would had filled the RAH three times so they save two dates but bigger venues can't be used always, think about the Palau Sant Jordi from Barcelona example I put before. It has a 17.000 capacity, but MK will only sell between 5.000 to 7.000 tickets there so, why you want a big venue that would be more than half empty?
Nonsense.

Then something else, only one concert in a bigger venue also means only one night for hotels and all that stuff that comes with being on tour. Does MK has something to say in this?? I really wonder how they make a tourschedule like this and who decides when and where (city and venue) they will play.....

PCM with the promoters.

I expect the tickets to be shockingly expensive in line with current prices for indoor shows but they will still sell
-
maybe he should do a Gilmour like tour, in beautiful locations, venice, pompeii, verona etc...less concerts, but special locations that make it more interesting...?
-
Regarding the state or the recording industry theses days I wonder if Richard or Glenn are making that much money from recording sessions.
MK is by far not among the top priced artists but I bet for the usual price increase on tix.
-

I saw Gilmour in Tienen Belgium on his last tour. Indeed a nice location but i do not see Knopfler do the same. Don't forget it was Gilmour's first tour in 10 year .

Do you guys think MK would be in for a tour like that?
-
No. The way David Gilmour tours is very unfair as there are very few concerts which tickets sold out very fast as there are more fans that want to see him that concerts to go.
Mk way is better as he plays almost all Europe and much of the US giving lot of chances to fans.

I wonder how much it would take the tour to be announced... first dates for Tracker tour were announced on September 16th 2014, Privateering ones on August 27th 2012...
My bet would be around the same time the album will be out. :think
I would've guessed just after the release too, however looking at these dates from Jbaent it appears the previous tours were announced before the album release. I suppose they can release the dates well before tickets actually going on sale mind you.
Ticketsales will not start before albumrelease. On several websites you can ofcourse order the new album and get a code to participate in the ticketsales. These codes will be availible untill nov 16 so no tournews before that one would think....... :think
-
I don't mind when ticket sales starts, I mind about dates announcement.

Okay, do we know how many countries are involved with the presale? In the netherlands you can order the album at bol.com to participate in the presale for a concert in the Benelux. Not in the rest of Europe. This is kind off strange i think. So they are probably going to release the dates bit by bit......i think.. :think

The virgin site offers presale to UK and Ireland. I imagine others shops would offer the same in other countries.
The presale codes doesn't need to wait to the release, as long as you pre-order and pay, they could send the presale code by mail so they can do it tomorrow if they want.

Perhaps they will announce something like the planning of a new tour is almost done and tourdates will follow. I do not expect any tourdates to be announced before the releasedate because off the presale codes that runs untill 16 nov..

The action for presalecodes runs untill nov 16. So even if i order the album at nov 15 i will get a presale code. Therefore i assume tickets will not be on sale any sooner. Afgreed? And what’s the point in releasing the dates 4/5 weeks before you can actually buy tickets ???

tour dates are usually announced with the date that the tickets would be available in presale and/or general sale.
For example, tour dates can be announced today telling that presale will start in two weeks and general sale on three weeks.
Actually, thats the way it's done. Maybe there is no two weeks between the announcement and the presale, but I had seen it many times.
They can even announce the tour dates telling that presale and general sales date will be announces shortly. That happened already as well.

It is highly probable that MK is not touring in Finland in next tour. So based on that, I suspect quite similar tour than last time.

So no Russia then 10000000000000000%. Not like he wanted to play there anyway, but the absence of Finland rules it out completely.

lets steer the topic back too next tour guys and girls ,
mark always seems to pull it out the bag, after 2010 I was a bit down with his playing (even though did like the set list, apart from Romeo and so far away (and it wasn't that bad)
, but 2011 thought he stepped back up at the gigs I saw ,
and 2013 thought he was solid throughout the tour and played smoothly ,
2015 thought he did ok but usa section he played better the the Europe section
, but wasn't as smooth playing as were used too,(but age guys) ,but still was a good standard especially on Sultans at Boston and Austin good examples of that,
and 2016 he surprised us all in with playtime deluxe,
so moaners out there don't discourage just yet , new tour may be his last , I think of Clapton who I follow a little bit, 2013 playing I got abit disappointed with but 2015 thought he was back too it ,

Have ticket sales for an MK European Spring/Summer Tour ever started later in recent years than this time?
Looks like MK's RAH residency could be between May 30th and June 5th 2019.
Hopefully we hear something soon.

So tickets on sale after the releasedate and i hope for dates announcement somewhere in the first week of november...

I won't worry too much as MK.com said they will handle presales as usual, but if I was any of you, I would mail virgin and bol and ask them about the precodes, as you had heard that presales will start late october.

I believe that presale code customers as well as other marketing partners have a different reserved contingent of tickets, so it doesn't matter if mk.com presales start at other times than other presales, because they don't fight over exactly the same seats.

Please note that this is how is scheduled theorically...
I mean, that it might be changed as far as some dates that might be announced are not 100% closed and that might delay the dates announcement.
Tour dates are scheduled to be announced later this month as stated before, and I truly hope it happens this way, but it might be delayed until early November.

UK dates are out. And a hint about the rest of the tour but no other dates.
@MK News
The ‘Down The Road Wherever’ tour commences in Barcelona in April and will continue all over Europe finishing in Verona in July before heading to the US through August and September.
-
The UK/Ireland dates are –
MAY 2019
18 LEEDS First Direct Arena
19 NEWCASTLE Metro Radio Arena
24 DUBLIN 3 Arena
26 GLASGOW SSE Hydro
28 LONDON O2 Arena
29 MANCHESTER Arena
30 BIRMINGHAM Genting Arena
-
Roughly 3 months across Europe. Isn't that pretty long?
