Mark Knopfler Discussion Forum / Re: DS Reunion at Glastonbury?

The 2002 charity shows were as close as possible to a reunion. Even though it wasn't on the official headline, yet to me, it still was NHB and DS up on that stage.

I mean, MK, JI, GF along with CW. Who else was missing in that lineup for it to not have been Dire Straits?  :)

I think if DS would have reunited at some point, around STP time 2000 would be ideal! A final onetime concert? Sure live 8 2005 would be cool! After that i feel MK became too old to really do the whole ds thing! My dream lineup for a final show in 2005 would be MK ofc, John, Guy, Alan, Pick, Hal, Chris! Love Alan Clark's work! Tho he seems to be problematic over the  years! A shame really his work on Love Over Gold my favourite album is wonderful! When i see the lineup of festivals this year i get really sad, thinking about how music have fallen off! I mean Charli XCX with her massive use of autotune is the biggest act in Glastonbury!

Three more, this time from Feyenoord, sound checking ahead of more 'On The Night' recordings.

Agreed, great musician and very important to the later DS years. However I think he probably annoyed Mark and John over recent years and I couldn't see him being absorbed back into the fold.

I know it's a necro post here, but there are a few questions I hope that Ed could maybe answer if he sees this thread:

What's your take on the drummer switch from Terry Williams to Omar Hakim during Brothers in Arms?
There are varying stories on how this happened... Terry said he wasn't happy with his playing, as playing to a click hindered his rhythmic feel. Neil Dorfsman, on the other hand, says he felt the drums were a problem and had to break the news to Terry... He added that no click tracks were used at all so Omar had a difficult job to re-do the drums anyway. Confusing, right?

Given one month was spent writing and three months recording BIA, did a lot of the songs change in the studio from the rehearsals?

As far as mixing went, was BIA finished in New York or finished at AIR Studios in London? The LP credits seem to differ to what Neil's recollections are on that one. Neil was probably thinking of On Every Street when he said they mixed in London, but I could be wrong...

Cheers!

As far as I recall, all those questions were already answered.

Where, may I ask??

Are you shure that the fills are Terry’s? Doesn’t Omar say that they were his in the interview?

Pretty sure they are Terry's. I listened to the tom-tom fills in the main song and the sound is identical to the tom-toms you hear in the intro. Plus interviews with Neil and Terry themselves.

Alan fan?

The musician Alan?
A fan... not really. I admire his work.
Alan have great skills and, above it, his tone and his chord voicings are top notch.

Great musician.

I'm sure Mark didn't care enough to handicap the release. How many did Alan sell?

Yeah! Sure!
I was joking when I cited Randy Newman song.

I bet that the "all good" from MK was from his management.
"We spoke" was, at max, a whatsapp message or a brief 'hi, there' over the phone.

I think that Alan felt himself lost when MK stopped to work with him and got closer to Guy. Maybe he tried to get back to EC's band and receive a 'NO'. I don´t know... just guessing. Or simply he got tired of touring and big artists.

Alan, a trully great musician.
