I'd say the big giveaway that its about The Straits is the line "no original members"

Hmmm, funny how Alan decided the leave "the straits" to go and try to do his own stuff (according to Guy) right after this song comes out.

Great song, shocked a little by the lyrics. But it also brings a smile on my face. Phil Palmer used the exact words when I talked to him 2 weeks ago " .... A wonderful band and the genius of MK in which it was my privilege to be involved for a short time" What a genius are you when you can write this. Not only a genius musician but also a genius writer.

From actual Rolling Stone review; it says it all in one sentence:

"A few years ago, former member of Dire Straits, calling themselves the Straits, began touring, playing the old repertoire that Knopfler himself often avoids onstage. "Poor souls," Knopfler says of that band, before softening his tone. "I don't know — it's not for me"."

It's a statement. How long has that chapter been discussed in Guy's forum. The question what MK thinks of all the cover bands has been brought up so often. So many discussions. So much bad blood. You never heard him say anything about it. Now he has done what he does best - he has written a song about it.

Pottel, what do you mean? Does MK speak about the lyrics in an interview?
If yes I would wish to read it...

Mk just said "poor souls" talking about them.
You might get lucky, now and then

Thanks! But I'm more confused now...MK sounds very gentleman in the interview, so why this rudeness and anger in the lyrics if it was written about ALan Clark or other tribute bands. :o

Mark's solo on the chorus at the end of the song remind me Jimmy Hendrix on "Hey Joe", same sound same structure, beautiful.
If I realised that the chances were slim,
How come I'm so surprised when the tide rolled in
