When was it? By 2001. Because he played the Pensa-suhr for this song.

@crimmer: yes WOL at mandela was one their best gigs. I believe they applied the same arrangement as Sidney 86.

Calling Elvis was played on the LP in 96 and during NHB shows too

WOL at Mandela is my fav one, and not exactly same arrangements as 86 : nothing can't beat EC's solos !

EC solos at WOL were nice, I wonder why Jack sonny never made an attemp to play a solo at WOL too at BIA tour.

+1000 :thumbsup

Jack's solos on WWE, expresso love & solid rock (sydney) weren't much tasteful imho,  not in the same vein as EC obviously
his noodling on the TYL intro in Sydney is cool, but nothing exceptionnal
EC...well that's another story

best openers for me :

- Stargazer / Once upon a time in the west
- Ride across the river. I like that the stage is dark during the flute intro and then jump into light with all the band comes in. (same as the curtain in 91/92)
- Border Riever, but I think that it would have been better if Mark would have come to the stage after the flute intro, just before the drums comes in, but I know that Mark is no more into this

interesting to notice that Once upon a time in the west is the only one which was the opener for 2 following tours.
I don't count 78 et 79 as 2 real differents tours, they are almost the same tour for me.
And I know that WII was opener in 2011 and 2013, but 2011 wasn't really a MK tour anyway

the other song that opened 2 different tours is Calling Elvis, but they weren't following

and I like very much how Walk of life opened the Mandela gig : far better than any other version

I cannot open it

Try this:

Thank you for this! The routine level of the band was very high at those times. Great memories!

If you listen to very early versions of MFN you'll hear Jack playing a small solo.  It was seemingly deemed inappropriate and banned by about the end of June.

My vote is for Border Reiver. Most powerful opener during the solo career. In 2010 some shows had BR-WAM-WII. What a powerful celtic punch to the gut!

Or Cannibals. But only because I have a soft spot for cajun music.  :)

DP is surely more powerful than BR, no?  That thick, distorted LP packs more punch than some whistles!

Live BR has a much faster tempo than DP and that's why it's better imo. But for me WII is the best opener ever in his solo career. I think it's his best solo song actually as well.

From the DS days I would say RATR was the strongest opener but my favorite is DTTW from the early days.

If I were to choose Mark's three opening songs now those would be What it Is, Why Aye Man and Boom Like That.

When I was in a classic rock cover band a few centuries ago we used to open our gigs with MFN and that was always like dropping a bomb, people would go nuts.

I loved Border Reiver best from all his openingsongs in his solo career
