LYRICS

My whistle under the archways
Still echoes down the street
All the way back to Deptford days
Nights down by The Creek
Notes as big as river boats
Still echoing through the clubs
With the horns of the trains
Down the old back lanes
And the lights of the corner pubs

In a taproom lined with mirrors
There’s a man there at the bar
Reminds you of somebody
He says I know who you are
He’s right, I know I could be him
But anyway who is who?
You could be looking at
What he’s looking at
And he’s looking at you

And I’ll be out of this place
And down the road wherever
There but for the grace, etcetera
I’ll see you later but it’s 1979
And I’m picking my way out of here
One song at a time

The slaving ports of plunder
Used to stink to heaven on high
Companions of honour
Always were in short supply
The Bristol ships and Liverpool’s
On every tide they came
The times they may have changed, my friend
Some people stay the same

And I’ll be out of this place
And down the road wherever
There but for the grace, etcetera
I’ll see you later but it’s 1879
And I’m picking my way out of here
One song at a time

A grinning mogul greets the crowd
At Execution Dock
All come to see three mutineers
Turned off at twelve o’clock
The shyster takes a ringside seat
As they’re bringing them from the jail
And twenty thousand tickets
Sold online on premium sale

So if you need to reach me
You can leave word at The Pig
I have no wish to stay around
To watch that Newgate jig
Or any more poor old fakers
Trying to dance in my old shoes
I’ll be gone over the ocean
With the transatlantic blues

And I’ll be out of this place
And down the road wherever
There but for the grace, etcetera
I’ll see you later somewhere down the line
I’ll be picking my way out of here
One song at a time

Reading again this part of the lyrics of "One Song At A Time", I think this is the song about DS Deptford days:

And I’ll be out of this place
And down the road wherever
There but for the grace, etcetera
I’ll see you later somewhere down the line
I’ll be picking my way out of here
One song at a time

That "I'll be out of this place" and "I'll be picking my way out of here" sounds like MK saying that, "One song at a time" he will manage to success and leave Deptford, as he did...

UPDATE:

It's official, it's the song about DEptford days:

Ask Mark Knopfler to explain the title of his ninth solo studio album and he will tell you that Down The Road Wherever is a line from one of the tracks: “One Song At A Time.” He'll give the credit for that title phrase to a sadly departed friend with whom he shared a lifelong love of songwriting and guitar playing, and their endless potential to change lives.

“I remember my pal Chet Atkins once saying that he picked his way out of poverty one song at a time, and it just stuck in my mind,” says Mark. “You get to an age where it is a few songs. But Down The Road Wherever seems to be appropriate, just because it’s what I’ve always done. I’ve always tried to keep my own geography happening in the songs, that applies there as well.” In “One Song At A Time” that autobiographical geography pinpoints Deptford, England, where the up-and-coming Dire Straits began to make their way, one song at a time.

I was already thinking the same. He often connects things in his songs, and maybe he could relate to Chet's story about being so poor as he knew how it felt when he was in dire straits in his Deptford days.
Looking forward to this one especially very much.

Yes, me too. Actually when I read that piece of lyrics I'm like singing it and I imagine one of those nice and melancholic chorus, and in my mind it sounds so beautiful...

I asked Guy, let's see if he answers.

I always bet that if you number the questions, he would number the answers, sometimes it works. This time it didn't. I don't know if he just ignored the first question or he didn't read it...

He already told us it would be clear when hearing the tracks. He isn't telling anything about MK lyrics and song meaning, he has never done it in the past i think. That's why he ignored the question. But good try ofcourse  ;)

If it is about the Deptford days there are only 2 guitars he can use on this:  the Hofner or the red Fender Strat.  I think we can assume it won't be the former!

Didn't he already have his National at this time ?

The red Strat was his main axe though at this time, therefore I reckon will be first in mind when composing the song.

It's a long track, in fact the longest of the album and it contains the album title line. Enough for watering my mouth.

Awesome. You were right jbaent. In One Song At A Time he returns to Deptford.
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home

Speaking of mystical references... this part leaves me totally helpless:

And I’ll be out of this place
And down the road wherever
There but for the grace, etcetera
I'll see you later but it's 1879
And I'm picking my way out of here
One song at a time

A grinning mogul greets the crowd
At Execution Dock
All come to see three mutineers
Turned off at twelve o’clock
The shyster takes a ringside seat
As they’re bringing them from the jail
And twenty thousand tickets
Sold online on premium sale

So if you need to reach me
You can leave word at The Pig
I have no wish to stay around
To watch that Newgate jig
Or any more poor old fakers
Trying to dance in my old shoes
I’ll be gone over the ocean

With the transatlantic blues

IF 1879 is not a misprint, we have different times here? Sold online? How does that fit to the old English stuff in the rest of the paragraph? Am I the only one who thought about Tribute Bands and The Straits when reading about poor old fakers trying to dance in my shoes?  I found a real Hotel called The Pig... What is it all about? I have no idea...
