Well a long time ago, came a man on a track. Walking thirty miles with a sack on his back

Maybe I’m bound to wander
From one place to the next
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home

The drinking dens are spilling out, there’s staggering in the square

I hear the Seven Deadly Sins and the Terrible Twins came to call on you

Standin’ on the corner of toulouse and dauphine, waitin’ on marie-ondine

I’m a soldier of freedom in the army of man

When it’s pop goes the weasel let go of the easel

My whistle under the archways still echoes down the street

And also DS:

High and dry in the long hot day
Lost and lonely in every way
I know the way I can see by the moonlight
Clear as the day
Now come on woman, come follow me home

My personal favourite opening lines from both DS (Telegraph Road) and Mark's solo career (Everybody Pays) have already been mentioned, but I can give another favourite of mine that hasn't come up yet:

There's gotta be a record of you someplace
You gotta be on somebody's books
I got shot off my horse, so what I'm up again...
