I am sure that DSL doesn't sell their product as Dire Straits for obvious reasons. Their contract ensures that the project name is Dire Straits Legacy. A tribute band with former DS members + original songs.
The promoters, smart as they are, uses the DS name to promote it on radio/social media. Because no one will really care about it.
The social-media post's description ensure that the name is Dire Straits Legacy.
The musicians does have nothing to do with the promotion.
Only a very small part of the audience will feel scammed.
On the next day, no one will remember it anyway.
And MK still get his money.
Don’t wanna repeat myself but here we go again… people won’t feel scammed because the vast majority of them, at least here in Brazil, year 2025, have no clue who Mark Knopfler is. Go through the comment sections in those posts and you’ll see that. As for the promo, every artist should keep an eye out for what’s being put out with their name. I guess everyone here has googled themselves at least once now imagine if you’re a public figure. But ok, let’s all agree to disagree. If Mark’s management saw this I consider my ‘job’ done.
What I meant was:
The topic was valid. However, it extended too much on debates about promoters, videos and articles.
DSL are playing on Brazil's countryside cities. They KNEW that the promoters are using their band as the Real Thing.
I am SURE that the on DSL contract clauses there is no obrigation to check videos or radio teasers. However, every article or social-media post, the band name is Dire Straits Legacy.
It is unthinkable imagine that MK Management (aka Paul Crockford) will block a social-media post of a small brazilian city because they are "misspelling" Dire Stratits Legacy?
I can imagine PC calling to an Joe Doe.
- Hi, here is PC, I am calling in the name of MK Management. Please remove your video about Dire Straits on the Macaé social-media channel.
- Ih! A lá... qualé malandragem. É trote? (please translate it)
Forget about it, man.
