Going tonight
-
Concert starts at 21:00 uur. But there is time difference of 1 hour so we will hava to wait a little bit longer to know if there will be any changes tonight....
-
I didn't remember any time difference in cordoba when I was there....
-
Outside Altice Arena, not quite sure if it was soundcheck or just background music, but I heard BIA (live).

Outside Altice Arena, not quite sure if it was soundcheck or just background music, but I heard BIA (live).
Would be awesome that it is played and that it becomes regular ! Last time I heard it was in 2010, and with no intro... Never got a chance to hear it again, it was too seldom in 2011/13/15...
-
I didn't remember any time difference in cordoba when I was there....
Lisbon is in the same time zone as UK, so it is GMT+1. Cordoba is GMT+2.

Me neither.

GoT, and fantasy in general, doesn't interest me at all. The only TV series I've watched the last few years are Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad (long time after BB was finished). And the Scandinavian production The Bridge. I like books better :)

Time for the "old man" to get a seat. He appears to have the seat out for Bacon Roll now too or was that just a mistake at Cordoba? Difficult to make out tonight.
Nice moment when someone in the audience told him what Portuguese was for hitchhiker. The audience aren't as enthusiastic as last night though!

Proper Band Intro ;D

Postcards

Fine rendition of Silvertown, well received by the Lisbon audience.

OES

meantime on every street going down remembering the set lists of the two previous tours, from the first dates onwards there have not been many changes in the following dates, except for guests, the set lists have always been static.
Last tour Mark played
Broken-replaced by Nobody :smack
Hill farmers- replaced by OUATITW 8) 8) :P
Sultans-replaced by Bacon :disbelief
multitime Marbletown-replaced by silvertown & Heart :clap
in conclusion a few tweaks but the concert structure has not changed much, except for the presence of brass instruments.
A question: knowing that this is the last tour, at least on a large scale, fully satisfies you?
-
I am super excited after watching all these clips posted from the european leg of the tour. Unfortunately I will not be able to see him before September. So I was thinking of ordering some of these concert recordings from Europe. I want to buy one from the Spanish concerts. Do you guys, especially who attended multiple of these concerts, have any suggestion- which one probably has the best overall quality? Thanks in advance!
-
Still think there will be some surprises and old favourites to come. Maybe, he will change the set when he returns to the UK
-
OES flawless into Speedway
-

I have a sneaky feeling. Remember Guy will leave the band if they don't play Dancefloor, which considering this is the last tour isn't much of a threat!

Not really a fair analysis.
Bonaparte was only played twice on the last tour.
OES only on the US part of the tour so so 99% of the audience that new.
Same goes for Your Latest trick
Also totally ignoring the return of MFN - I guess 99% will be so glad to have that back. and
STF and Matchstick Man
On top of that quite new arrangements for a lot of the songs.
That makes it 8-9-10 changes from the last euro tour - thats about HALF of the show.
I think they have made some mighty fine choices and have a very smooth working show which is WAY better than last tour.
-
Speedway sounding better now.
TR now.
-
Just another vote for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Only because the set-list isn’t exactly giving us much to talk about. Until tomorrow, of course, when Guy announces his immediate departure from the band because of the lack of a Dance Floor....

There's plenty to talk about the current set list and Guy has already said as per DR F Forum, he's not leaving as they have played BOTDF......
BOTDF is obviously to come, maybe as a replacement opener for NDT?

They seem to have integrated NDT into the opening with Crocks introduction and the band walking on stage so I think it's here to stay now as opener.

Poorer TR tonight. In fact, generally I think the show has been less impressive than Cordoba.

Hmm, attempts at humour don’t always work. Re set list, I’m actually delighted by OUATITW, Silvertown and MFN, my point is that we’re not seeing much day-to-day change to discuss. And does anyone think that playing Dance Floor in rehearsal remotely counts?

it happends up and down at the moment , listening too Cordoba from last night as we speak , catching up with the bits a missed from lastnight

Going Home, same set as yesterday

A nice game of thrones episode.

Going Home, same set as yesterday
Pretty boring considering it's still early in the tour; usually they try new songs before settling on the set. This time they aren't really doing anything with it.

They are, they are playing it to death!!!

Overall, i think its a pretty good set, with good mix of old-new brass-folkie-guitar. I am not sure about future changes. To be honest, i can´t imagine this 2.15h set being played until the very last show. I think that main changes will be drops of songs (Telegraph, Heart Full of Holes, etc).
Before first night, (and knowing the lack of surprieses in the previous tours) i was expecting something like:
1. Broken bones
2. Corned beef
3. Privateering
4. Father and son
5. Hill farmer blues
6. Romeo
7. Sonny liston
8. Bonaparte
9. Nobody does that
10. Postcards
11. Marbletown
12. On every street
13. Speedway
14. So far away
15. Going home
I am pleased by the new additions (Silvertown, Once Upon, Heart Full, Money) and the re-arrangements to old songs, but like others, i would like Trapper Man, One song at a time, etc.
I would love something like (not very far from actual setlist):
1. Why aye man
2. Back on the dancefloor (brass doing the female vocals part)
3. Once upon a time in the west
4. Romeo
6. One song at a time
7. Matchstick man
8. Bonaparte
9. Heart full of holes
11. Silvertown blues
12. Your lastest trick
13. On every street
14. Speedway
15. Telegraph
16. Money
17. Piper
18. Going (second encore)
-
Yes, I was there and it was amazing, except for Money For Nothing cowbell, Michael McGoldrick played it in not quite the band's tempo.

Great, great, great show! Great band, great music, great sound, great set of lights, great Mark!
Fucking great! Best Mark concert even without Sultans. Be ready for a a big night, those will assist in the future!

:lol :lol :lol
I've already seen some people complaining about the same thing, so hopefully it's something that will be improved upon down the line. For those who don't understand, you see, the cowbell is a type of instrument that is meant to be played perfectly, and I mean: perfectly. Because it cuts through the mix like a hot knife through butter, it floats over everything and if it has flaws, then the whole song is destroyed (for those who cares anyway). I hope this clears some things up, can't get away from complaining about stuff, so here you have it :lol

That's right, it ruins the song, but I think it can be fixed at the mix.
but I'm sure you didn't complain when Heart full of holes started right ? ;)

The cowbell is played on purpose to sound just after mCusker tambourine. I like it like that.

Yeah, no complaints at all. We got really great seats through Fair Admission, it was the third row in the middle — insane. Just half a meter from the first row, which is like 50€ more expensive. I like that!
Nobody Does That as an opener it was one spoiler I couldn't avoid, not the best opener of course, but hey. I guess it's good because it doesn't have ridiculous guitar solos right away. No Sultans is like a personal present for me, because you know how I hate this song.
All the new songs is the greatest thing in a while, that's the way you do it. It's was very touching to hear Mark saying goodbye before playing Matchstick Man, but I was hoping for the one man band situation. But as with an opener, he need some help from the musicians.
I know I just repeat everything that's been said already, so I'll stop now.

So which songs are going to be left out of the setlist by the end of the tour?
My guessing: STP or BR and TR. We already (temporarly?) lost WAM.
Or maybe we will remain stable at 17 with some changes.
-
Still loving the Live version of 'Vesta Man' very much and the trumpet start, it seems to make it a bit 'Christmassy' if you know what I mean especially as the song is set around Christmas....
-

Yes, especially as Danny comes in at the word Christmas sounding like sleigh bells!
-
It will always be a mystery to me why Mark decided (decides?) to stick to such a static setlist. To play the same songs for that many show would drive me nuts. Maybe he just feels he wants to deliver the best possible product in terms of quality, after all people have paid a good deal of money, and therefore wants to keep working on details and minor changes? Or maybe he just isn't a spontaneous, risk-taking type of guy and values the sense of control and assurance higher? Could be both. Or neither :) I still don't understand how he and the band cope with the routine.

You have different kind of musicians. I've been in bands before. Played with guys who'd playing anything so so and played with guys who want to do less songs but do it perfectly and make it sound great. I'm not comparing myself to anyone around MK of course but I get it.... It's a choice you make. I think MK prefers the latter.

Yeah, I get that, and Mark is also known to be a perfectionist. But you'd think they'd rehearse enough songs to have a large pool to draw from and vary things. Just for the sake of sanity :) If you play a 15-date tour, I'd understand you could stick to the same setlist. But with almost 100 shows? We're only a few shows in, though, so things may change later.
-
...No Sultans is like a personal present for me, because you know how I hate this song...
For much less than that people were burned alive in the middle age... :o :lol

It's MK last big tour, and he looks like uncomfortable physically. A setlist set on stone could be a tool to cope with the long tour he has to do. He'll be safe with it and probably that would produce great versions to the middle/end of the tour as it's so played that it's perfect.
I think that having some songs in rotations, beside the "Going Home / Piper" one would have been great, playing one day "Bacon" and the next "Back on the dance floor", it would have been just one rotation that with repetition would had been safe.
We are just on 5th concert but in Madrid I was under the impression that this is going to be it until the end.
And that's not bad. This tour have some great surprises like "Once upon a time", "Heart full of holes", "Silvertown blues" that makes this set, even it's static, great and different, despite the come back of "Bore with Bonaparte", Danny's bodhran and the brass section doesn't turn it into something better, but they do it with "Paraguay" which sounds so great with trumpet, percussion and the latin piano thing...

Yes I was hoping for some rotation too but losing hope for every concert with the same set.
OSAAT will be the biggest mystery if it turns out they will never play it... Trapper Man would do so much better than NDT as opener...
Wonder if Paraguay will have the same brass sound as in Spain/Portugal for the rest of the tour. It sounds good and refreshing to that song.
-
I'm a big Buena Vista Social Club fan, so adding that Cuban feel to Paraguay is amazing. I don't know anything about Paraguayan music to know if it is musically 'correct' to do this, but it's the same continent, so at least it's in the ballpark he-he

If MK is happy with the set list, I am too, because there are seven songs that I haven't heard live before and one - MFN - that I haven't heard live since 2005. So that's not bad imo! :)

:thumbsup I think the same. I can not wait for July 10

I have said this already and I might be totally wrong, but I think that OSAAT is too personal for Mark.

Certainly yes. I thought it would be the final of the concert. :think

+1. Lots of interesting points there and I agree.
Another thing I might add though is that they are on a break of a couple of days so they can visit more wineries or perhaps rehearse a couple of songs. We'll find out soon I suppose.

I still stand on the basis that the average concert goer only attend "one show per tour" so no need to change the setlist during the tour.
Doing rotation is only an artist choice.

I remember talking with Steve Phillips at one of his regular Tuesday night gigs. We talked about the NHB and Steve said what a great band it was. Steve said he had a list of songs as long as his arm but Mark just wanted to play the same stuff every night. Steve’s view was it needs to be fun for the artiste and therefore the audience will enjoy on that, but he said Mark is a perfectionist and would rather stick with the same songs, perfecting his output, so everyone gets the best experience he can deliver.
Stepping back, both Steve and Mark are correct. If you go to the theatre, Local Hero for example, they don’t randomly throw in another song. It’s all about giving 100% to the performance. Mark this tour has really changed the set list, he’ll now work at it to deliver the best he can (regardless of any separate and unconfirmed concerns related to his health).
Personally I think we’ve 1-2 further surprises to come. Gradually and sporadically. I hope WAM makes a return. If it doesn’t at Newcastle then there’s a fair chance it won’t again.
Have to say I’m very much looking forward to my gigs at Leeds, RAH and Manchester. But selfishly, as I’m attending more than one show, I’d “like” a bit of variation...
-
I really don't go along with this perfectionist theory as being why he sticks with the same setlist. Why then go out on tour at all if you are such a perfectionist; only the perfectly played album versions will do. Surely those attending the early shows will be hearing less polished performances so this is not the actions of a perfectionist. If someone is a perfectionist to this excessive degree then they will deem only studio versions appropriate for public release I think. I also reckon that Mark is not such an obsessive perfectionist, especially nowadays as he would've stopped touring many years ago.
-
Fair comments DMG, can’t disagree with any of that.
But ... 12+ songs per album, less so in DS days but it’s very rare he goes back and plays anything previously I played live. Silvertown Blues is the exception this tour (rehearsed in 2001 but never played to an audience). Other oldies are a new arrangement and/or different guitar (do you remember Guy getting cross in 2011 I think when he said that WAM and Sonny Liston were different because of the blue Gibson).
There’s lots he will never revisit and as a show has to please a wide ranging audience then the only solution would perhaps be to play a residence somewhere with a different album every night. Now that would be amazing. Dreams...
So he’ll rely on tunes he considers ‘work’ and just get better at them.
-
Previously “unplayed” live ... not I played live!!
Bloomin spell checker being a smart Alec again!!

Come on DMG. Studio and live are 2 completely different beasts. Perfection in one is completely different to perfection in the other. One is akin to sculpture, the other very much 'in the moment'. Your 130th attendance of any hypothetical MK show may well be someone's first and only. It's from this ethos that the desire to make the live show as good as possible comes.
Some artists refuse to play the same note the same way twice, and this too is a great approach, I've been lucky enough to see Bruce Hornsby a few times and he's a great example of this (you cant beat a bit of random atonalism!), but Marks approach is equally valid. Its just 2 ends of a wide spectrum.
Lets enjoy him while he's around because we will miss him when he's gone....

Absolutely, and I'm not criticising Mark at all. I'm just not going along with the perfectionist theory.

Sharing two articles in Portuguese music magazins.
"There are no free guitars and Mark Knopfler is worth gold. Old fashioned farewell night at Altice Arena.
Ex-Dire Straits turned this evening's concert on his farewell to Lisbon audiences. And it was toasted with a full house."

"Mark Knopfler: The Masters Say Goodbye Too.
The man who placed Dire Straits in the rock pantheon returned to Lisbon for a concert from which he bid farewell to his audience, although many did not know it before entering the Altice Arena. In the middle, he played some of the classics that catapulted him to fame, showed songs from his new album and gave, above all, a great guitar lesson."

This time round I think he is certainly trying to make the live performances as good as they can possibly be. That's surely a form of perfectionism, just not a note by note approach.....

Don't forget, that for the last 10 years or so Mark also needs to figure out setlist by his vocal abilities. Despite being an outstanding singer on records, he's not as perfect live as he used to be (if you can call that singing :lol).
I'm pretty much convinced that 5:15 am was dropped so early because of the song being too difficult to sing live. So he has to pick songs that's not too hard to play, not too hard to sing, but also remain unpredictable and fresh. An extremely difficult task if you ask me... And One Song At A Time could be another "too much of a song", it seems.

Good point there and would certainly explain why Trapper Man hasn't made the set; can't imagine that sort of enthusiastic vocal live these days. OSAAT I find easy to sing along to though, but it could just suit my voice. MFN and Once Upon a Time would both benefit from a bit more oomph, the reason R&J and BIA haven't been so good for years. In fact the last time his vocal has any energy or enthusiasm was the BIA tour!

Hey Lis, where's the picture from our short but wonderful meetup? It's the first time I've seen somebody from AMIT IRL, so it's a big deal :lol
Big kudos to Dutchessy for connecting us, it was a true miracle of Facebook magic. And hopefully Lis will say I'm not as rude IRL as online :lol

That's why I was so sure that Nobody does that will be played and that will open the concert.
Practically was the same that broken bones but better.

It sounds like the opener for a Graeme Blevins and Tom Walsh concert - not an MK concert! :-\

Nobody Does That sounds good and I understand that this is the first song but Why Aye Man should stay. I recall the tour in 2007 Cannibals and Why Aye Man.

A great tour indeed, with lots of songs heard live for the first time from Ragpicker's Dream - extended Marbletown, HFB, Devil Baby, Daddy's Gone to Knoxville and opening with Cannibals. It was wonderful for me to be there on the first night in Amsterdam and to have so many surprises! :)
-
Yes. I also have beautiful memories. May 2, 2008.
-
I thought Cannibals as played in 2008 was so slow, dull and lifeless compared to earlier versions. The worst decision as a starter until BB in 2015.

But in Amsterdam the rest of the show was so great (until hearing TR new first half).

Exactly Val, and how many of those songs have been played this tour so far? That is why I don't have an issue with Mark's set lists, they are his songs and it's his tour, so he can play what he wants, he may not vary the set list during the tour, but the set list does change from tour to tour, and like has been said before, a lot of people will attend one, maybe two shows per tour, so for them it's fine, but if you attend multiple shows each tour, there might be a chance of hearing the same songs!!
