Any songs you skip?
« on: August 14, 2008, 06:44:26 PM »
I know on a MK forum this is entering dangerous territory, but I have a question for you all:

Is there any DS/MK song that you have to skip past, or not include in your playlist at all?

The reason I ask is last night I was driving home from work listening to Sultans of Swing, The Very Best Of and I just had too skip past Twisting By The Pool.  I have never been particularly enamored with it.  It's just a little too 'poppy' for me.

Should I feel ashamed?  :-[

The one that is, at least compared to its popularity, rather a skipper for me is Walk of Life.

Pottel. How can you possibly skip R&J. Especially the live versions.
The outro is pure sex :) :-*

Must Agree with BBB on R&J and Pottel on the album version of PI, although I thought some of the live performances of it were ok. The R&J outro has so impressed me over the years that I made a compilation CD called "You and Me Babe how about it?" which contained what I thought were the best outros to this song from every tour up until 2006. :) ;)

YOU & ME BABE HOW ABOUT IT?

1980-1988:

1. 1980 Boston
2. 1981 Weisbaden
3. 1982 Birmingham
4. 1983 London
5. 1985 Houston
6. 1986 Sydney
7. 1988 London Mandella

 (90's - 2006):

1. 1991 Dortmund
2. 1992 Wobburn Abbey
3. 1996 Vaison
4. 2001 Lucca
5. 2002 London
6. 2005 Boston
7. 2006 Verona

Various venues from 1980 to 2006

Additional comments:
An interesting look at the live version outro's for the very popular Dire Straits (Mark Knopfler) song "Romeo & Juliet. Titled "YOU & ME BABE HOW ABOUT IT?", this compilation is mainly audience recordings but with a couple of soundboards. The sound quality of the recordings including their volumes are different from concert to concert. It's interesting to hear the evoloution of this outro from year to year, including, other band members inputs. From Alan Clark's piano in the early 80's to Terry White's Sax in the mid 80's and Paul Franklin's Pedal steel in the last DS concerts then Guy Fletchers haunting keyboards through the 90's and Richard Bennetts great guitar work of the late 90's and 00's all add to the "live" experience. The Verona version has a slight glitch in the outro - but how could we not include this City in a song about Julio and Julietta. Available on 1 CD. Artwork included.

I listen to The Ragpicker's Dream a lot; in fact I think it is a very underestimated album. But Old Pigweed is a skipper for me. Some of the tracks off On Every Street are also skippers including My Parties.

Ragpicker's Dream grew on me slowly, but it is now becoming my favorite over Golden Heart.   I love A Night in Summer. . . .
Old Pigweed is a favorite.  Perhaps because I'm always weeding the stuff out of my garden and flower beds.
Nice to see that Ian's compilation made the JVt site! ;D      My dog Lizie and I dance to Walk of Life, so I can't skip that.   And I do like Twisting.... betraying my age probably.
Okay, I'm working up the courage:  here is my skipper:   Calling Elvis. . . . .   Don't bomb me.
But a spoonful of forgiveness
Goes a long, long way
And we all should do our best
To get along

What for one person is a skipper, another person adores!  One of my all-time faves is R & J, especially on the KTGC tour (MK seems to sing it with even more feeling) and I love Old Pigweed, infact the whole RPD album, and also A Night in Summer and live versions of Calling Elvis!   :)

Ragpickers is a grower for me too. I'm ashamed to say, that i really couldn't get into it at first.
But everytime i listen to it, i find different things. I found HFB the hardest one to listen to. Not in the respect that it was a bad song, in fact it was my fave on the album, but because it was CRYING OUT for a GREAT guitar outro, which of course never happened, until KTGC Live 08.
WOHOOOOO.!!!!!!
Pottel. In respect of Calling Elvis. Dire Fakes started with this at mine & Ingrid's 40th. It was AMAZING.
i got the Dvd of the party yesterday, so after i have finished watching it myself i will be sending copies out to anyone who may be interested.
Ingrid, yours will be in the post in a couple of days. ;)

Not a fan of Old Pigweed, but I can usually get through it without skipping. Red Staggerwing used to be a skipper but I can just about tolerate it now.

The only two skippers I can think of at the moment are In the Sky (booooooring, crappy sax, sounds like Chris de Burgh or something) and Don't You Get It (never liked it for some reason, I think it's the lyrics that really annoy me). Sonny Liston is a potential skipper as well, the album version goes on a bit and sounds a bit samey.
