Growing on me too. Still don't know what a bacon roll is.  :lol

My last theory explain the bar sounds at the start and that the bacon roll is just a bacon roll... The song has a main character talking to a client in the bar he works these days, telling that he used to have a better work, a better life etc, and while talking he is interrupted by a client asking for his roll...

Sounds plausible. With that I will listen closer. And LE, you're quite right too. It's just a roll. with bacon.  :lol

In that interview from today Mark was quoted saying that it was about a brexit man... A man who cannot deal with change, with modern times, paying no longer with cash etc..

So it's just a man maybe talking to someone, who is not important, friend, wife, colleague, random person, justifying himself and complaining .. and he waits for the waiter (waitress) to deliver his bacon order .. and asks during he tells his story when the waitress comes along ... therefore the 'xcuse me...so the chorus interrupts the story and shows at the same time what kind of guy he is to order something so out-of-date ...

The waitress maybe has no such things as old fashioned bacon rolls anymore and suggests a toastie instead...  and in the question about which sauce, brown or red, the decision is reflected... the Brexit .

It's just that Mark never uses a single word randomly.

Mark should hire you to write the liner notes for the album.

Maybe they will be inside just like on the album Get Lucky.

Right. LE, here's my plan: we write a collective email to Mark's management. I provide the chord book, you provide the liner notes. I take 50%.

Must admit that after listening to this song a few more times and reading both the interpretations of you all here on AMIT as well as Mark discussing it in the recent interviews really made me revalue this song. Thanks for that. The subject and the not so straight foward lyrics of the verses seem quite interesting and clever. However, now I still can’t help thinking it’s a pitty somehow that both the chorus and the middle eight weren’t dealth with in a different way. Maybe changing perspective towards the view point of an observer or a culmination of moaning / self pity from the main character would have done better. To me that would sound less silly than building up to singing about a bacon roll and toastie, which seems otherwise unrelated to the rest of the lyrics. I would understand using something like that in a first verse to set the scene so to say, but not the chorus. Just my opinion, curious about yours.

Not sure about the rest of the UK but here in Scotland bacon rolls aren't an old man thing. Everybody eats them. My kids love a bacon roll.

And you don't put sauce on a toastie...

Do you get them at Diners still?

was following Shangri-La's suggestion about the red or brown line. What else could it mean?

"When you're dealing with a toastie
What would you prefer, brown or red?"

I feel really stupid to write it, but could it be just mustard or ketchup?

Not sure exactly what a diner would be here but you get them in cafes in the like, not an upmarket item you would get in a decent restaurant.

Typical fillings for a toastie:

Cheese
Cheese and ham
Cheese and tomato
Cheese and pickle

Detail, but important one? To me, all the same... Wrong vocabulary...  ;D
