I think it's a great song, a great musical challenge for him, experimenting with jazzy sounds and arrangements. Nigel, Jim and Ianto are excellent musically on this, and I think the way MK describes the jaz scene in that concrete time is so great as usual.

This song makes me long even more for some greasy lap steel licks from Leisz.  :)

And it's worth noting that Mark doesn't sing here. He is great at melodeclamation. But he was always good at it

More interesting to me... So musicians from the band texted something to Guy, and somehow Mark wrote the song. Maybe Mark and Guy are the same people? :think

I don't get this occasional experimenting from Mark, to be honest. Do you want to experiment with jazz? Then take your band already completely made out of accomplished jazz musicians and make a jazz tour or a whole jazz album... I don't get this "only the tip" attitude. Be like Bruce Springsteen! Take a whole folk gang with you and rock the hall:

P.S. And record a professional video of doing it, lols.

If I want an accurate description of the 40s jazz scene, I'll read an encyclopedia article or watch a documentary. If I want to listen to jazz from that era, I'll play some Charlie Parker or Dizzy Gillespie.

"Oh, it's Mark, so it has to be good." Bullsh!t.

We surely become too crazy about MK sometimes, but in this case, it's almost a rejected song, so I think we can lower our expectations. It's definitely competently played and recorded as always, just had a listen on decent equipment and it definitely swings. Mark's band is gorgeous and he barely gives them time to let loose like that. But he only records his own songs, so he needs to come up with something like this to give them some place to do their thing. I'm pretty sure it was a little gift for musicians from MK. Like "You Don't Want To Get You One Of Those" is a gift for Tommy Emmanuel.

If I want...If I want...

Our expectations... Mark has different. He want to try differently.

You do realise this was recorded for an album full of songs looking back?
It's a 5 minute song so how can you expect an accurate description of anything?
I agree it's certainly not a great song but what do you expect from one which was discarded?
Just because you or I don't think too much of this song doesn't mean others can't appreciate it .
You seem to want to criticise Mark more and more and I just don't see the point of that on a fans forum celebrating his work.
If you really don't like something do you really have to spoil it for others by offering nothing but criticism?

Nah, it's not great at all - musically or Lyrically! Bottom of the pile for me I'm afraid!

At least someone talking like the way is meant to be. The "for me" part is the key. I totally respect you don't like it. I love it, so it's a matter of taste in the end...

Are you really serious? Do we need to say "according to me" every time we write a comment? Isn't what we write here already "according to us"? Let's say "I wrote it" every time we write a comment. Wouldn't that be ridiculous? This is already a comment section. It is not a section of scientific fact, of certainty.

Ok, so what if instead people talks like they were not stating facts and the rest we are wrong?

Would that be easier?

I guess no, people who think are always right would find this difficult always.
